Those who have presented findings share a common theme of students reporting aheteronormative, exclusionary environment in engineering [17 – 20]. Haverkamp et al. [19]utilized collaborative autoethnographic methods to explore the experiences of two TGNCundergraduate engineering students who expressed an engineering environment withexclusionary social dynamics. Group projects and interactions, which are common toengineering, were identified as “a particular hurdle towards engineering peers being part of theirsocial support network” [16]. Adding to the complexity, engineers are not trained teachers,therefore outreach events can often contain overly complex activities that do not take a student’sdexterity or comprehension skills into consideration. In this project, we present findings from an observational study conducted at acommunity-focused outreach event with over 200 participants. With the retrofitcompleted, implementation of these “retrofit robots” into the curriculum began. In a year-longlab-based course sequence, students start learning concepts on robotics toys, then shift to theseretrofitted robots for more advanced concepts, and then complete the sequence on industrialrobotics systems. Volunteers runningworkshops and learning stations can be a great resource for beginners [3]. They should activelyengage participants, especially in hyper-technical environments where even experiencedparticipants hesitate to seek help [9]. Informal interactions can
