The workshop was intentionally designed to focus instruction on processesand techniques with a low barrier to entry, i.e. those that don’t required years of practice to gainproficiency, to enable students to complete relatively high-quality work without extensivetraining or prior experience. Toward the end of the workshop we introduce topics related toproduct development including opportunity recognition, conceptual design, sourcing materialsand hardware, and the characteristics of an effective prototype. The workshop concludes with student

and university engineering curricula in the US have been following similartrajectories for some time. In the early 1900’s, engineering was treated more as a ‘trade’ at theuniversity level, and high schools encouraged vocational studies, including auto repair, woodshop, metalworking, cosmetology and other ‘trades’ to the non-college bound. Between 1935and 1965, most university engineering curriculum moved away from a trade-school curriculumto a more theoretical, mathematically-intensive one, delaying any hands-on design projects untilthe senior or ‘capstone’ design course 11.Similarly, the nation’s high schools tried to erase the division between the trades and the college-preparatory tracks to prepare anyone who might be inclined to attend a

This paper presents the results of a 17 month project between twolarge public institutions to investigate and incorporate educational tools and practical experiencesin the teaching of SE in existing design courses, to be later transitioned into a broad range ofcourses within the curricula. The main objective of the project introduced students to thepractical applications of the fundamentals of SE without displacing other course content. Thetarget courses at Texas A&M University included three senior-level courses, of which two wererequired capstone design courses and one an optional technical design elective

Impact of Peer-Generated Screencast Tutorials on Computer-Aided Design EducationAbstract This paper presents the design strategies of an engineering education research project fundedby the National Science Foundation (NSF) and discusses the preliminary findings. Studyparticipants were the students who enrolled in the "Mechanical Engineering Drawing" courseand learned about computer-aided design (CAD). We grouped students into two sections ascontrol section versus experimental section. Control group students received a traditional andteacher-centered instruction. The screencast tutorials were provided to them by their instructors. In the experimental section, students designed their own screencast tutorials. They shared

Offering a single Bachelor of Science degree in engineering without discipline-specific majors or concentrations, the goal is to train and produce engineering versatilists, a termpopularized by Friedman [3], who can work in cross-disciplinary environments. At the heart of ourprogram is the six-course engineering design sequence that provides instruction on design theory(thinking, process, methods, tools, etc.), sustainability, ethics, team management, and technicalcommunication (both oral and written), while incorporating elements of engineering science andanalysis. Students apply design instruction in the context of two projects during the six-coursesequence—a cornerstone project spanning

The ability to understand important topics in engineering drawing such asorthographic projection, isometric drawing, hidden views, and sectional views is very critical asit represents the fundamentals of engineering drawing education. However, research shows thatsome learners with poor spatial ability had trouble understanding basic fundamental concepts ofengineering drawing.
