The equations stem from all of the physical laws available to the engineer/student: Laws of Thermodynamics (particularly the Conservation of Energy), Newton’s Laws (including laws of static equilibrium, conservation of linear and angular momentum), Maxwell’s Laws, etc. For this problem, the First law of thermodynamics is used together with the equations for convection and radiation heat transfer to and from the body and through the walls of the ice chamber.
