the benefits of and motivations for service learningwere surprisingly close to the program intent developed by the faculty. These benefits includeddevelopment of soft skills, application of technical skills and formation of an internationalperspective. This implies that the faculty was successful at developing the itinerary anddelivering the program in a way that achieved these goals. Despite the overall success of the program, the positive impacts reported by the studentswere not linked to the program components as planned by the faculty. The focus isprimarily on first and second order systems, and especially ones dealing with motion controlsince the class typically includes both electrical and mechanical engineering students. After extensive coverage in several lectures of the underlying mathematical theory of theposition and speed of a motion control system, the response of the system to a step input isdemonstrated in the laboratory using a configurable MS150 Modular Servo System fromFeedback, Inc. Important aspects of this hardware demonstration include the effects of gain,inertia, and damping on the response of the system. Engineering includes the largestdepartment, the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department. The official tally ofaerospace engineering (AE) students was 534 in Autumn 2012 and the number of mechanicalengineering (ME) students was 96. Therefore, the department is responsible for over one-thirdof all students at the campus.The engineering student body is composed exclusively of undergraduate students.
