Feweryoung people enroll in engineering programs than in the past, and many who do either drop outof such programs at a high rate or become dissatisfied with their career options and seekemployment in other professions after graduating.8 The 2002 report, Engage to Excel, indicatesthat increasing retention is the most efficient way to boost STEM graduates, and identifies keychanges engineering faculty members can make to their curriculum and teaching to fosterretention. Key is the need for intellectual and personal engagement, something often stifled byuninspiring courses and unwelcoming faculty.7 Retention also

Autoethnographic techniques are used to construct three accounts ofthe student’s encounters with an upper level administrator, various members of faculty, and anacademic advisor. Undergraduate research is a “high impact” educationalpractice1 that can be particularly effective for engaging students from diverse backgrounds.2–5The NSF makes a substantial investment in undergraduate research experiences, which it views as“one of the most effective avenues for attracting talented undergraduates”6 and preparing them forgraduate study and careers in

Previous research in STEM education shows that studentsuccess can depend on integration of academic and social experiences (e.g

Their TC capabilities helped them advance their careers, often providing“differentiating” value to their employers.Moreover, as Figure 1 shows, the greater the amount and intensity of TC instruction and qualifiedfeedback, the greater the benefit. Those graduates with a high TC index8, 11 reported that their TCproficiency helped them obtain and adjust to their jobs, work well in teams, garner recognitionand promotion, and build confidence. Those who left college without good communication skillsreported they belatedly realized the importance of these skills—and recommended making thepresently

Each undergraduate student was expectedto attend a weekly one hour seminar to learn more about the process of engineering research andwork three to five hours per week in a research lab, supervised by a graduate student mentor, inorder to earn one course credit.
