Rather than being sponsoredby a company, the majority of the project was funded by an external grant from the foundation ofa large international electrical equipment manufacturing company. . Anticipating and acting on future developments would enable engineeringprograms to prepare, but there is little consensus on its future in 10 years. IEEE created aCurricula and Pedagogy committee (CPC) and charged it to forecast the future of ECEeducation and to make recommendations regarding roles that IEEE will play in preparing forand crafting that future. As an initial step, the committee engaged in a scenario planningexercise1,2,3,4 to consider possible trends in engineering education. 14% of the state college (2-year colleges) students earn a bachelor’sdegree in 6 years. The recent National Student Clearinghouse Research Center (NSCRC) 2020-21 Report (Bobbitt, R. et al., Aug 2021) indicated that higher education lost about 191,500 transferstudents in 2020-21, three times higher that 2019-20. Thiswould not only allow us to meet the growing demand for engineers in West Michigan, but itwould be well aligned with our program’s student-centric focus. To prepare the students for thegraduate-level engineering work, an exhaustive list of prerequisite undergraduate classes thatstudents must take has been approved. While each applicant’s curriculum is tailored, GVSU’sSchool of Engineering developed a general plan to onboard students from a variety of non-engineering undergraduate backgrounds.
