Theelectronic survey was constructed with a web-based survey tool and distributed through email toprincipal investigators (PIs) of 44 training programs currently funded in the 2013 fiscal year byNIBIB under the T32 mechanism. project: 1. ShapeOko 2: Presently five ShapeOko 2 desktop CNC machines8 are deployed with two additional ShapeOko 2 CNCs under construction. The ShapeOko 2, shown in Figure 1, is an open source, x-, y-, z-axis, moving gantry design developed by Edward Ford9. An aluminum extrusion MakerSlide10 rail and carriage system is used for both the axis struc- ture and precision motion guide-rails – thereby reducing material use and costs. The drive system comprises a total of four stepper motors (dual motor x-axis). Timing pulleys and belts are coupled to the rail and carriage gantry to generate smooth motions. sketching and the use of manipulatives, along with other haptic or hands-on activities, has been shown to increase the spatial skills of university level engineering andtechnology students who scored below the expected mean on the Purdue Spatial VisualizationTest (PSVT) [1]. Previous research also indicates that students entering into the STEM fields tendto have higher haptic abilities than the population as a whole. Hispanic/Latino population.Preliminary Results The wide variety of issues discussed in the literature but related to the misrepresentationof Hispanics/Latinos in engineering called for a categorization of themes.
