Although lower Hispanic enrollments in higher education have been cited as a primarybarrier to STEM careers, more Hispanic high school students are enrolling in higher education. They represent thesecond largest ethno-racial group among undergraduates (25%). Despite the relatively high representation inundergraduate education, they represent only 8% of the total STEM workforce. Women and Hispanic women remainseverely underrepresented in STEM fields. With this negative impact on the nationalengineering workforce where “only 40 to 60 percent of entering engineering students persist toan engineering degree, and women and minorities are at the low end of that range”5(p.40), it iscrucial that we find ways of stemming the engineering attrition. One area that bears explorationis that engineering fields that are thought to have helping- or caring-oriented attributes (e.g.,biomedical and environmental engineering) seem to draw students who may not have consideredan engineering degree or career. A “BME Capstone Project Fair” is held one week later, where all potential advisorsand students gather to interview one another for the various projects. After the Project Fair,students indicate their interest level in each project using a numerical ranking system (i.e. 1 =extremely interested, 4 = not interested in project).
