engagement.We ground our work theoretically using the Academic Plan Model to understand how freshmanengineering students’ use of LMS tools relate to their performance in the class. The AcademicPlan Model details potential influences on curriculum design at the course, program, andinstitutional levels. As the Model suggests, faculty members may (or should) consider learners,instructional resources, and instructional processes when developing their curricular plans. Priorresearch within and outside engineering, however, has shown that faculty tend not to draw onavailable data when considering these components, if they even consider them at all. A unique requirement of the course is the completion of cross-disciplinary design project with two other courses offered during the same semester. Accordingly, each criterion hasits own set of key performance measures (KPMs). For every KPM, there is one or more keyperformance indicator (KPI) to enable the measurement. Johnson.1 In Fall 2014, there were 32scholarship students enrolled in this class (7 in graduate school); however, the class was alsoattended by 32 students who did not hold scholarships. Some of these students had held the$4,000 scholarship, however the scholarship funding had ended in the spring 2014 semester. , participated in planning meetings, and attended design reviews of the bike rentalsystem. We and our business partners hope that the bike rental system will increase the numberof students frequenting downtown York and its businesses.In the first stage of this project, in the 2014-15 academic year, two teams of engineering studentsdeveloped their own independent designs. Each team had about ten mechanical, electrical, andcomputer engineering students. Faculty advisors from all three disciplines advised on theprojects. The initial phase of the project was conducted over two semesters.
