ways this is not the idealmechanism of matching expertise. The most experienced person delivers rather standard lectures(close to the text and PowerPoints or lecture notes) with little interactions. The person to whomstudents can take their questions, frustrations and confusions is often far less experienced. Itmight be akin to having the physicians taking medical history and vital signs, while difficultdiagnosis is referred to the nursing staff (or physician assistants). By far, the most expensivecomponent of teaching is faculty time. T.A.’s are usually the second most costly resource sincethere are often as many as four required in larger class). The study ultimately found that engineering students’ writing skillsimproved throughout the duration of the course and improved more if students are explicitlytaught spelling and grammar rules.A number of conference papers have also looked at student writing, such as Trotz et al.’s 2010paper,[14] which employed the CLAQWA assessment tool (see Flateby and Fehr above) to reporton a study of civil and environmental engineering student group reports at the University ofSouth Florida. They reported scores for two senior level classes across all 16 elements (issues allrelated to basic and rhetorical literacy) of the CLAQWA tool. They reported higher scores thanFlateby and Fehr, with mean values between 2.6 and 3.7 (out of 5

Both programs werecompeting for some of the same group of students. Offering evening courses was not enough togrow the technology programs, as the engineering programs also taught evening courses. Manyof our working students are on call and have to work odd and long hours when they are on-duty.This makes attending regular classes difficult, if not impossible. The constraint was overcome byoffering new online courses that met the needs of these students and their employers. Thestudents were able to

workplace aftergraduation, it is important that they understand the nature of those problems that they willencounter and the specific challenges they are going to face in the real world. Not many researchers have investigated students’ perceptions of engineering workplaceproblem solving. Some of the existing studies we have found suggest that students might nothave a good understanding of engineering workplace. For example, Jocuns, Stevens, Garrison, and Amos (2008)’s study indicates some students graduated from engineering without a clearidea of what the actual workplace will look like4. Similar findings are shared in the workpresented by Matusovich, Streveler, Miller, and Olds (2009). Their qualitative study over a fouryear period found three out
