, limiting insights into how undergraduate students orthose in other disciplines might experience redesigned assessments. The short-term focus of the studyalso means that long-term impacts on learning and skill retention remain unexplored. Additionally, studies could examine the impact of redesigned assessments on instructor workload, studentengagement, and equity and accessibility, ensuring that innovative assessment practices benefit alllearners.ReferencesAnthropic. To strengthen the trustworthiness of the analysis, member checking was conducted bysharing preliminary themes and representative quotes with participants, who confirmed theinterpretive accuracy of their experiences. Furthermore, peer debriefing with external STEMeducation researchers provided critical feedback to minimize bias. FACE aims to develop leadership skills, create opportunitiesfor students to engage in co- and extracurricular activities, and promote career and educationalgoal achievement within our engineering FYS to aid in retention of their programs.FACE is intentionally designed to align with leadership identity development models, particularly Komives et al.’s (2005) LID Model and Schell & Hughes’ (2016) EngineeringLeadership Identity Model [13], [14]. These frameworks emphasize that leadership identity iscultivated through structured experiences, reflection, and mentorship. Accordingly, FACEincorporates structured peer mentorship, self-assessment tools like CliftonStrengths, andleadership reflection activities to help students actively

Additionally, DSP laboratoryexercises are typically software based, not requiring any further hardware than student’ s personallaptops, which makes the mixed learning approach feasible6. Finally, the course possesses arelatively small student population from a variety of disciplines, making it a good choice forapplying this method. The studio laboratory exercises are designed to be

Thismasculinity was present in engineering spaces on campus as well. Interestingly,Konkon equated aspects of masculinity with militarization in engineering. Shecriticized many of the masculine “dude-bro[s]” in engineering as being excited towork for defense companies and wanting to “blow people up in the desert”.
