experiences of academics investing extra time in developing andsupervising research projects for the Icarus Program. Our results suggest that the time investmentin providing students with a hands-on experience where they could voluntarily engage with realprojects had a positive impact on the faculty development of the faculty members. Theydescribed how participating in the program improved their teaching practices by being able tointeract closely with students and better understand what they thought was important. This alsoled to more engagement from the students in their courses by developing some out-of-the-classroom interactions with their professors. 70 percent of our engineering graduates are employedin the SE part of the state of Wisconsin, indicating that our students are highly valued by theindustry.The cooperative education program for undergraduates at UWM enjoys a 40-year history, with73 percent of the undergraduate engineering students participating in cooperative placementsor internships.
