This process is repeated following the secondround of exams. One modification of the exam wrapper between its first and second implementation was theintroduction of the after-action review terminology. In order to emphasize the students’professional development as engineers, the experience with exam wrappers was framed as afour-stage after-action review. After-action reviews are used to debrief the process andperformance on a training

2017 ASEE Gulf-Southwest Section Annual ConferenceBesides completing the relevant equipment/safety training, one of the most important initial detailsinvolved planning and laying out a timeline of goals, tasks, contingency plans and deliverables. Thisguided exercise was crucial to lay out a work plan as well as to align expectations. The timelineinvolved most major steps of research including preliminary testing and data analyses, literaturereview, hypothesizing, prototyping, validating, etc. Guidance/advising was in the form of about anhour long face-to-face meeting each week; students were encouraged to set up additional meetingsor drop by the faculty office as needed, or call the faculty to the lab if needed. The students weregiven autonomy

discipline issues that are raised in the existingprojects, in the meanwhile discussed how to meet industry demand in the process ofnew engineering construction. The research findings are as following: (1) Thecommonness of programs’ schemes is emerging. In terms of mechanismconstruction, the mechanism of collaborative education receives the most attention, while the cultivation of soft ability and engineering innovation ability are focusedmost in terms of the talent ability; (2) Most of the construction plans are aimed atthe transformation of traditional disciplines, and there is little construction ofcorresponding disciplines for national key industries such as energy conservation, environmental protection and new materials; (3) The overall design of

ME students weretaught in two different sections, by different instructors but following the same syllabus andcourse plan. A separate syllabus, course plan, and deliverables were used with the EM and ISEstudents, who were taught together in one combined section.Every student in the study created pre- and post-course concept maps of their individualunderstanding of product design. They were first introduced to concept maps along with someexamples, and then they were instructed to individually “draw a concept map that embodies theconcept of ‘product design.’” From these submissions, the research team was able to assess thefrequency of the presence of different concepts and relationships in the maps, allowingcomparisons across major programs as

The five main goals in this collaborative infrastructure wereestablishing (1) a management structure, (2) one primary high school partner, (3) two academictransfer agreements, (4) an Industrial Advisory Board of three members, and (5) seven additionalhigh school partners to scale future implementation.Three of these goals were fully accomplished within the planned timeline, and the two otherswere partially accomplished. This paper discusses detailed achievements in each area along withthe project’s external evaluation results and the project leadership team’s lessons learned. Thepartnership infrastructure that has been built will be used to build the skilled technical workforcein North Louisiana through increasing high school students

efforts have aimed to provide a holistic engineering education [1], producing T-shaped engineers [2] who possess broad knowledge across disciplines with deep expertise intheir domain. We have seen many pedagogical advances, such as team-based learning, problem-based learning, experiential learning, and creative learning using virtual reality, to name a few.The core driver for this change stems from the need for engineering education to prepareengineers to stay relevant and to contribute to society in the face of rapid global change andadvancement in information and technology. These trends have been the main motivator for integrating liberal studies and engineering.Bucciarelli and Drew laid out a “design plan” for liberal studies in engineering

Inthis project, instructors demonstrate how 3D pens can be used to teach biomedical engineering in middleschool classrooms. This STEM lesson will use hands-on/minds-on materials while walking students through the EngineeringDesign Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve (Museum of Science Boston, 2020). During the unit, thestudents integrate each of the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in a fun andaccessible way by using 3D pens to create models. LEARNING GOALS: Students will effectively design and construct a prototype prosthesis using a 3D pen

expect that the physicalartifact which a group creates is representative of a shared understanding among the group, fromstudies of engineering design with adults, we know that coming to this shared understanding ofthe problem, the team strategy, and the design artifact itself requires intense negotiation.Designers must communicate across all members of a team in order to establish roles andrelationships, plan and change activities, gather and share information, generate and adoptconcepts, and avoid and resolve conflict (Cross, 2011). Studies of elementary engineeringeducation illustrate the ways in which young children manage these elements of designingtogether (Jordan & McDaniel, 2014; Roth, 1996; Moore et al., 2019; Wright et al., 2018

“boost”. The boost strategy incorporated in the current work involves the use of an emailcommunication to identified students. The correspondence, which is outlined in further detail inSection 6.2, also asks the students to create a customized, personal action plan. As noted above, this study (which was the first iteration of the boost for this course), focused on implementingmethodologies that could be scaled to other universities by other professors. With this in mind, the boost was done in a way to create minimal extra requirements to students and courseinstructors.4 Context and Framework4.1 Research QuestionsIn order to evaluate the effectiveness of the current study, the authors focused on the followingtwo research questions: 1. Finally, students created portfolios and individualdevelopment plans which would be expected to support their career development, but studentsreported that these requirements were more onerous than helpful. The D3EM program serves asan example of how impactful programs can be designed to encourage students to explore avariety of potential future career pathways, particularly beyond tenure-track faculty positions.Implications from the findings include the continued implementation of such programs andsustained efforts to change the conversation about PhD careers that reflect the job market andgraduate student interests.Introduction In the past decade, graduate engineering education has emerged as a research

They learnt to tailor theirconversations depending on their audience. This assignment was assessed by me in a traditionalclass setting. I plan to repeat this activity in my subsequent classes. outcome. Dr. Topaz’ National Office Hours were never empty and everyone whoattended walked away with something new. Based on the Dr. Topaz’ success, we established asimilar plan at USMA. Every Wednesday, the Dean’s Fellows hosted on online Office Hours forfaculty on Microsoft Teams to field questions between 1615 to 1700. Independent of attendance, the purpose was to provide a place for faculty to virtually stop by to pursue knowledge enablingimprovement in teaching techniques, modality integration, and pedagogy development. If no oneshowed up, nothing was lost. However, for faculty that showed up, they would contribute to anevolving peer-sharing learning environment which could continue to grow.In order to set the conditions for strong faculty

As students progress acrosscourses, we plan to collect longitudinal data to measure improvement in student problem-framing skills across semesters or even years.MethodsThe research team developed an initial rubric for the NIC based upon four different levels:beginner, emerging, developing, and informed designer for each of the four sub-categories in theNIC (stakeholders, stakeholder needs, needs statement, and information gathering). Onedelimitation is that we believe these levels represent problem-framing skills at the interval, if notratio level so that the assigned values of 1, 2, 3
