These three programs have been heldprimarily as recruitment/retention tools for RIT and are discussed belowSWE SleepoverThe SWE (Society of Women) Sleepover is an annual program, held each spring, for 11th gradewomen. The program has been in existence for a number of years, and is planned and run almostentirely by RIT’s Society of Women Engineers student section. Since it is mainly used as arecruitment tool to demonstrate RIT’s engineering programs to young women in high schoolsaround the Northeast, it is centered around providing an RIT experience. Attendees spend a fullday on campus, where
own desired outcomes and develop methods for continuouslymeasuring the extent to which these outcomes were being met. Each program had todevelop and implement a plan for measuring attainment of program objectives andmethods for assessing results to make program improvement. This paper is based on theexperience in this process of the University of North Texas (UNT) Nuclear EngineeringTechnology (NUET) program.The NUET program was started in 1990 for delivery to the Comanche Peak SteamElectric Station. In part, this program was responsible for converting a Department ofIndustrial Technology to a Department of Engineering Technology. A new departmentchair, who had some experience with an ABET accredited program, was hired in 1993 toseek
anddevelop teamwork, community involvement and citizenship skills. Service learning also offersstudents the opportunity to gain contextual knowledge and solve real-world problems that couldnot be formulated in a textbook. For instance, students engaged in the National EngineeringProjects in Community Service (EPICS) projects rate the impact of their ability to work in teamsas the highest outcome of their service-learning experience, followed by enhancement ofcommunication skills.3 Students also report honing other skills that are components of the ABETcriteria4, which are customarily hard to teach in conventional engineering courses. After everyone had finished the individual ranking, the teamsmet and discussed the situation, and then ranked each of the items as a team. entrepreneurial Reengineering Makes Industry Meaningful In College program not onlyexposes students to the world of industry within the confines of the classroom, it is areplicable, cost-effective model that can be adapted to a varying number of semesters andintegrated into a variety of technical programs and college settings.The origin of entrepreneurship in engineering and electronics at IVCCTen years ago, the engineering design instructor and a business instructor at Illinois ValleyCommunity College developed a creative plan to provide their students with workplace,entrepreneurial experiences. As a project in one of their courses, the instructors integratedtheir students into teams to develop, produce and sell a product. They named the projectMaking
resources per project: a design challenge from anindustry sponsor, with industrial liaison engineer available for a finite weekly time (e.g.,2-4 hours), and project funding of $15,000. Each project included a contract fordeliverables, namely, a first semester with “product specifications, concept generationand evaluation, a preliminary design report, a project plan, and an analytical andexperiment plan and report, and a final report and project documentation”. Thesubsequent semester allowed time for prototype realization, with an end-of-termdemonstration to the industrial sponsor, to include “a systems level design report,prototype results and report, a production sample, and an acceptance test. This course,initiated in the mid-nineties, has grown

’ conceptualization andexposure to System Dynamics and Controls fundamentals by providing less restricted exposureto a variety of systems that encompass the more important Dynamic Systems concepts. The plan involves the development of a System Dynamics Concepts Inventory and theimplementation and assessment of three Web-enabled laboratory formats: (1) inter-campuscollaborative experimentation, (2) remotely-accessible experiments, and (3) virtual systemexperiments. Each format has its inherent advantages and disadvantages. Remotely-accessibleexperiments, for example, can be made more readily available to students outside of regularlaboratory hours, but the lack of hands-on exposure limits the potential scope of the experiments.Each format has been
cutoversized to save time during preparation. All teams then ensured that part of the tool path wentaround the entire piece to obtain the correct outer dimensions. At least one week was given forthe students to create a solid model of their part and a properly dimensioned drawing.Computer aided manufacturing and fabricationPart design using computers and manual machines are common elements in many engineeringcurricula, but experiences with computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) are not as typical. Once apart is designed a manufacturing plan must be created for the selected machine. On a CNCmachine this includes tool selection, tool path, and feed and speed of the tool.
