development.Preliminary results indicate that students differentiate between researcher, scientist, and engineeridentities qualitatively and quantitatively, but that these identities are separate from the salientidentity activated when completing student-type tasks. As such, items developed in this work canbe used to craft a framework for understanding graduate student experiences, but futurerefinement may be necessary to fully capture students’ transitions from undergraduate tograduate education. seek through our work overall isthe enhancement of both students’ and faculty’s capacities to engage issues of inclusivity, equityand social justice. Towards this end, we aspire to shift School community members’ cognitiveand affective knowledge of power and privilege. While there are quantitative assessment toolsthat measure related constructs (e.g. cultural competencies), we are not aware of any instrumentsthat measure a person’s understanding of social power and oppression, particularly how sociallyconstructed differences and identities like gender, race, and class intersect and combine to affectpeople’s lives in various settings. Undergraduate students were recruitedfrom an engineering living learning community (LLC), with invitations to participate in the studydistributed via email by LLC leadership. Graduate students were recruited by graduate programdirectors, who also sent email invitations to all students enrolled in their graduate engineeringprograms. A total of 182 students completed the survey via Qualtrics, an online survey platform.Participant demographics are shown in Tables 2-5. In one study on retention of engineering students afterfreshman year, several pre-existing factors were evaluated quantitatively to understand if theyhad any statistical impact on engineering student success [41]. This study used a multi-universitydatabase which contained information on 87,176 students from 9 universities to predictgraduation using six variables (ethnicity, gender, high school GPA, SAT Math score, SATVerbal score and citizenship status). These roles were rotatedthroughout the semester and every youth had a chance to play each of these roles. Each group ofyouth was supported by a dedicated STEM coach and another adult volunteer from the IHADprogram. Two undergraduate and one graduate student from the engineering program at theUniversity of Colorado were recruited to serve as STEM coaches who facilitated the program.Each coach participated in a professional development program designed to familiarize themwith UAVs, the overall curriculum, the engineering design practices being emphasized in thecurriculum
