courses and be prepared for upper-division coursesupon transfer has increased. A survey of enrollments in engineering courses at the JEP partnerinstitutions shows an overall enrollment increase of 52.1% from 2010 to 2016 despite the factthat over the same period, total enrollments at the JEP partner institutions decreased slightly. However, courses requiring laboratory components have been difficult to develop and offeronline in these colleges. For instance at Cañada College, although enrollments in lecture courseshave increased over 100% due to a dramatic increase in online enrollment, enrollments in labcourses have only increased 23%12.In 2014, inspired by the success of the Joint Engineering Program in strengthening communitycollege engineering

In addition to research, she devotes significant time developing and implementing effective pedagogical approaches in her teaching of undergraduate courses to train engineers who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, and able to understand the societal contexts in which they are working to addressing the grand challenges of the 21st century. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2018 Peer Review and Reflection in Engineering Labs: Writing to Learn and Learning to WriteAbstractClear

the standalone technical communication courses in the Departments ofChemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering at theUniversity of Texas at Austin [3]. Finally, rather than using a standalone course to teach writing,a number of engineering departments try to interweave the teaching of writing into a sequence ofengineering courses. Such a course sequence occurs with two upper-level laboratory courses inthe Mechanical Engineering Department of Virginia Tech [4]. However, with recent increases in engineering undergraduate enrollments [5], many suchcourses are stretched. Faculty are asked to teach greater loads, often without additional resources. One such example is Pennsylvania State University

important topics and example problems in class, and to assign readings and additionalpractice problems for out of class work. It is notable that the measured improvements inperformance occurred despite the significant reduction in lecture time compared to the controlgroup. To create additional lecture time as well as a common exam time for multiple sections of thecourse, a new course model is currently being implemented. Instead of two 80-minute or three50-minute lecture times per week, with one of these often used for examinations, we are movingtoward a model of two 50-minute lecture sessions per week plus one common 110-minutelaboratory time per week. The laboratory time will be used for examinations during most weeks, and for extended problem

for Howard students in order tonot only prepare students for engineering practice, but also adhere to the overall mission of theinstitution. Context helps motivate students to apply their knowledge in ways that increase thelikelihood they will have the “bigger footprint” and contribute in meaningful ways to society.Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts and isknown as a pre-eminent institution of research, teaching, and learning in the sciences andtechnology. As an institution founded to impart applied knowledge, MIT implements educationfrom a laboratory approach, stressing hands-on experimentation. This approach is congruentwith the Institute‟s motto, Mens et Manus – “Mind and Hand.” The mission of
