Rebecca Bates Minnesota State University, Mankato

Becky Bates received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington. She also received the M.T.S . degree from Harvard Divinity School. She is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Integrated Engineering at Minnesota State University, Mankato, home of the Iron Range and Twin Cities Engineering programs.

Susan Lord University of San Diego

Susan Lord is Professor and Chair of Integrated Engineering at the University of San Diego. She received a BS from Cornell University in Materials Science and Electrical Engineering (EE) and MS and PhD in EE from Stanford University. Her research focuses on the study and promotion of diversity in engineering including student pathways and inclusive teaching. She has won best paper awards from the Journal of Engineering Education and IEEE Transactions on Education. Dr. Lord is a Fellow of the IEEE and ASEE and received the 2018 IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award. She is a coauthor of The Borderlands of Education: Latinas in Engineering. She is a co-Director of the National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI).

Emanuela Tilley

Emanuela Tilley is Professor of Engineering Education and Director of the Integrated Engineering Programme at University College London (UCL), in London, United Kingdom. She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA). The Integrated Engineering Programme is an award winning teaching framework embedded in the learning experiences of undergraduate students across UCL Engineering to better prepare them for tackling future global challenges. Professor Tilley has established an international profile in the areas of leading curriculum design and development as well as cultural change required to support and foster innovation in engineering education within higher education. She is a Board Director for SEFI (European Society of Engineering Education) and Director of Education at the UCL Centre for Engineering Education (CEE).

Jenna Carpenter Campbell University

Dr. Carpenter is Founding Dean and Professor of Engineering at Campbell University and President-Elect of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). An expert on issues impacting success of women in STEM and innovative STEM curricula, she has held national leadership roles including ASEE Vice President, WEPAN (Women in Engineering ProActive Network) President, and Mathematical Association of America First Vice-President. In addition, she chaired the National Academies Ad Hoc Committee on the Gulf Scholars Program.

Dr. Carpenter is co-recipient of the 2022 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Techology Education from the National Academy of Engineering, recognizing her contributions as Steering Committee Chair of the Grand Challenges Scholars Program. Carpenter is an ABET Program Evaluator and on the Executive Committee of the Global Engineering Deans Council. In 2015 DreamBox Learning selected her as one of 10 Women in STEM Who Rock! for her advocacy and TEDx talk, “Engineering: Where are the Girls and Why aren’t They Here?”, the only academic on a list of CEOs, politicians, and actresses. She received the 2019 ASEE Sharon Keillor Award for Women in Engineering Education, as well as the WEPAN Founder’s Award and WEPAN Distinguished Service Award.

Abstract

The term “integrated engineering” is being used in new education programs. As a framing concept, we believe it has value for the wider engineering education community. A small group of program heads has facilitated conversations about how integrated engineering could benefit other programs and the community in general. This paper provides background and describes some of the outcomes of past conversations with the goal of including more voices in the conversation and initializing the formal use of integrated engineering as a prompt for improving engineering education.
