I would like to present this work without a full paper. Typical lab courses require written documents tailored to specific audiences and for students to work in teams. However, little guidance is provided as to how to consider audience and how to work as a team. This presentation will discuss how one hands-on activity provided an ice breaking activity for teams and emphasized the importance of considering audience. Additionally, the students were engaged in a lecture-based class, which consisted of approximately 70 senior-level chemical engineering students. In the lab course, students write multiple technical communications that have to be tailored to a particular audience such as engineers, management, and non-engineers. However, students struggle with the concept of audience and most documents are geared towards technically knowledgeable engineers. With the help through a KEEN workshop, an activity was developed that required students to work in teams to make climbing holds out of modeling clay. The premise was that a company called the instructor and wanted holds that were family friendly and that the climbing community had never seen before. The teams were given clay, a ruler, and a list of guidelines that the company requested. They had to pay attention to the audience in order to deliver a stellar product. Halfway through the activity, which went about 20 min, the company “called the instructor” and more guidelines were given, which required the holds to be mounted to pegboard using specific bolts. All the teams put their designs on a wall of the classroom and the instructor provided commentary and feedback for each of the designs. Then, the class got to view the boards and vote for a class favorite. The following class, awards were given for the best holds that met the design requirements. Approximately a week later, a survey was given to the students on the impact of the activity. The students indicated that the activity helped get to know their team better and realize the importance of the customer needs.
