. Thesimulations propose a separation distance between indents, based on the indent size, to avoidinteraction between plastic zones. A change in the size of the plastic zone can be found, andquantified, as the hardening modulus is varied. IntroductionIndentation tests are commonly used to measure mechanical properties of materials. For instance, mechanical properties of a thin film cannot be assessed by tensile testing which is extensively usedin engineering to measure material’s properties, but they can be measured by micro-indentationtests. Different indentation hardness tests standardized by indentation geometry, indentation size andother indentation parameters have been performed by different investigators

1 Elastic-Plastic Behavior of Threaded Fasteners Under Multi-Axial Loads Joseph Erwin, Laith Alqawasmi, Tariq Khraishi Mechanical Engineering Department University of New Mexico AbstractFasteners play an essential role in securely connecting separate components in practically anyproduct. Since these components are generally made of ductile metals, their behavior under non-yielding loads should predictably follow the relationship between stress and strain defined by theYoung’s Modulus of the material. To better understand the behavior of fasteners under multi

piston valve: hardness, smoothness, andstability after finishing [12]. High hardness is necessary to avoid mechanical damage due to normaluse. The hardness of both Nickel Silver and Monel are high relative to stainless steel. The nickel-plating of the Nickel Silver is added to increase the hardness at the surface but can wear off duringuse over time. The surface should be relatively smooth, but also ridged preferably in the transversedirection to motion, such that lubrication can create a film pressure, which improves the overall sealand air pressure of the piston valve [8]. The final condition of the material determines thesmoothness, which is dependent on grain size and orientation and final finishing processes, such allthe surface treatments

information from computer-aided design (CAD) software. The effects of printing parameterson the mechanical characteristics of 3D printed parts are documented in the literature. This researcharea is evolving continuously as new materials and technologies are developed. The focus of thisstudy is to investigate the effects of printing parameters on the shape memory recovery properties of3D printed parts with the stereolithography (SLA) vat polymerization process. In this research, aFormlabs SLA 3D printer with FLGPCL02 material was used. The FLGPCL02 is a commerciallyavailable liquid polymer that shows good shape memory characteristics when cured with a lasersource. For analysis purposes, the effects of print orientation and layer thickness on the

electrical circuit analysis.Project:(i) An RC circuit is used in estimating the speed of a horse running a 6 km racetrack. The circuitis a series connection of a 80 V source, a switch, a 25 MW resistor and a 25 µF capacitor. Theswitch closes when the horse begins to run and opens when the horse crosses the finish line.Assuming that the capacitor charges to 65.5 V, calculate the speed of the horse.Observation: At first sight, the students had no idea of how to address the problem. While theyhad a strong foundation in mechanics, capacitor charging and discharging, and general circuitbehavior, they lacked an ability to connect the various concepts. This would be an example of theUnconscious Incompetence, a lack of awareness of what the skill gap is

soaps, ketchup bottles, and other viscous liquid containers. Theyare made of a synthetic material using polystyrene. This flexible yet durable solid offers flexibility, allowing for softer valves that can hold viscous liquids in place until pressure is applied. Theyspecialize in allowing for a calculated amount of liquid to flow out of the nozzle with the applicationof pressure through any method, the most common being that of squeezing a bottle. The dropletgenerator system uses a similar mechanic that could theoretically function the same. However, thenew objective is to create a no-spill system on the droplet system. There were two options for manufacturing the silicone valve needed for the system. The first was tohave an official manufacturer

neodymium magnets, and/or superconductors, and/or exotic high temperatureelectromagnetic materials, and/or advanced innovative cooling systems. Those learned scholarscould not see any way to overcome the basic fundamental laws of pure physics that were limitingtheir ability to make such a significant improvement in electromagnetic motors performance. Thus, they decided as one mind, to close that Book of Knowledge, as their work was deemed to befully complete. As they were closing that great book, a tiny little voice in the distance yelled, “Wait, Wait, I have an idea!”.As the Book of Knowledge continued to close, they heard the voice get louder in the distance, “Wait,Wait, I have an idea!”. As the Book of Knowledge was almost closed, they heard a

; this approach oftenleaves students questioning the practical application of the subject and how it relates to theirdiscipline.1-3 Many students then ask, “Why do we even need to learn this material?” and quickly loseinterest in learning.1 This was the case for the students enrolled in our junior-level Biosolid Mechanicscourse at Texas A&M University within the department of Biomedical Engineering. As such, wedevised an interactive learning module where students could practice their static mechanic skills in aclinical context. In the activity, students virtually performed hip implant surgery and compared how changes in femoraloffset (moment arm) affected resulting hip abductor force and subsequent patient pain after surgery.Studies have

building deforms under the action of forcesprovides a concrete example of how the abstract concept of linear equations is used in a real-worldstructural design. Learning through concrete examples of forces-displacements instead of abstractvariables enables the students to apply these concepts to other areas of study. I have realized theimportance of grounding abstract concepts in real-world applications. Students appreciate thepractical aspects and the links to real-world examples as reflected by student comments such as“Loved that you used real life examples to teach the material, I learned really well because of theexamples”.In thinking about how to approach the geotechnical engineering course, I hoped to apply some of thestrategies of using

• Computational Thinking • Engineering Mechanics • Engineering Electricity/Magnetism • Engineering EconomicsThe professors have the freedom to tailor their course content to be more inclusive of what theirstudents bring to the course. The professors also teach the lab sections, which are taught byTeaching Assistants on main campus, which provides the professor with a different perspectiveon student engagement with the curriculum materials and physical student practices.Following are some professor observations regarding their EA experiences:“The professor actually prefers teaching at the EA due to the increased diversity among thestudents. A much larger age range, mix of socio-economic status, and family status can be seenin the EA two-year
