and several LEDs were packaged into a scaled-down accurate model of nuclear power plant cooling tower [35] which was printed on a 3-D printer. The cooling tower makes the heating process seem more realistic. Instead of controlling the temperature of a transistor, students could visualize controlling a much bigger real-world thermal system by utilizing the same principles as applicable to a much smaller and simpler system. Although an actual cooling tower relies on natural convection, our design adds forced convection driven by a small fan at the top of the tower. It is an additional process parameter that changes the operation of the system, and adds more flexibility to a lab module. The total cost of the

Environmental Engineering Department, University of Nebraska 5. Assistant Professor, Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department, University of NebraskaAbstractEngineering education stands as a pivotal driver of technological progress, and evolvingdemands necessitate innovative methods to cultivate the next generation of engineers. Integratingactive research engagement into undergraduate curricula presents a bridge between theoreticallearning and practical application, fostering comprehensive understanding. By merging hands-onprojects, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world problem-solving, undergraduate researchexperiences (UREs) can rejuvenate engineering education. Statics at the undergraduate level.1.2 Literature Review / Epistemological foundations1.2.1 Active Learning Methods The implementation of active learning approaches in engineering education has beenwidely explored in the literature. Active learning methods encourage students to activelyparticipate in the learning process, promoting deeper understanding, knowledge application, andthe development of essential skills. Moreover, active learning can narrow student academicperformance gaps particularly for underrepresented groups [1]. Problem-based learning is a prominent active learning approach that shifts the focus frompassive listening to active problem-solving and critical thinking. In PBL, students are presentedwith real-world

The proposedhybrid STEM camp aims to create a nurturing and stimulating environment for young learners, fostering their passion for STEM, and preparing them for a successful future in these fields. Theinclusion of in-person workshops, enriched with immersive experiments and hands-on projects, will solidify theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, while the virtual componentsensure accessibility to a broader audience and promote collaboration between students acrossvarious geographical locations. The hybrid STEM camp is envisioned as an innovative anddynamic program, inspired by the experiences of the Nanomaterials group, to inspire and equipthe next generation of innovators and problem solvers in the world of

classes such as statics, dynamics, or fluid mechanics. This severely limits students who bestdigest information through hands-on learning. For instance, consider a simple steady conductionproblem in which the boundary conditions define a parabolic temperature distribution within aflat plate. While the governing equation might be sufficient justification for a “book learner”,another student might best be served to see the results. This specific problem would be trivial tomodel and would demonstrate the application of analytical calculations in a real-world scenariovia visual graphical results.Note that students should still be expected to solve these problems by hand in the traditionalsense. Simple cases such as these are not time-consuming and

brief introduction to analog and digital electronics [1].Motivating non-ECE students to engage actively in the course presents a challenge, as many mayperceive it as merely fulfilling a degree requirement or preparing for the FE exam [2]. To addressthis issue, the addition of course projects has been proved as an effective strategy in basic electriccircuit analysis courses. By building the course around a set of interesting projects and drawinglinks to real-world applications whenever possible, previous studies [3] have successfullydemonstrated the value and relevance of electrical engineering to non-ECE students. Forinstance, projects like a solar-powered cellphone charger, an electromechanical box with a self-switching mechanism, an LED cube

programmingparadigms after students have studied OOP.Functional Programming had the attention of computer science programming classes back in the1980s and 1990s. Crawford [2] presented their successful experience at Texas A&M in teachingFP in the freshman computer science courses, and Hughes [3] expanded the importance of FPbeyond the classroom and to the real world. However, with the rise of new programminglanguages and the shift in the industry’s needs, Java and Python started to take the lead in the late1990s and early 2000s [4], [5]. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2023 2023 ASEE Midwest Section ConferenceRecent years mark the next rise of Functional Programming. using a new sensor, most of the class encountered challenges when it came toimplementing the basic steps initially.ConclusionThe three-week workshop facilitated the understanding of various topics, such as sensorcalibration, motion tracking, and filtering algorithms. By working with real-world data andprojects, students gained proficiency in coding and programming the IMU, interpreting sensordata, and applying filtering techniques to minimize noise. The course aimed to educate studentson the fundamentals of IMUs, their features, and their practical applications through a series oflaboratory exercises. Although the course received some positive feedback, there is room forimprovement, particularly in providing more in-depth mathematical

This is due to the higher printing temperature of the filaments.Leaving print cooling on may cause layer adhesion issues or lead to failed prints caused by thesolidification of the current layer before the subsequent layer is printed. Testing different materialswill give students real-world experience in using 3D printing with novel materials.Possible ChallengesThis will be a preparatory workshop that introduces a new resource that will complement currentlyavailable additive manufacturing and machining resources for senior capstone projects. The format of this lessonaligns well with the learning cycle of exploration, invention, then application developed byphysicist Robert Karplus and co-workers. The learning cycle is an instructional strategy forfocusing on hands-on experiential learning [14]. The learning cycle allows students to first learnthrough their own spontaneous reactions to a new situation with minimal guidance (exploration). Then, a new concept or principle is defined to help the students answer their own questions thatthey developed in the exploration phase (invention). Finally, the students find new uses for theconcepts or skills invented earlier (application
