Coupled with its complementary reference 3,the paper provides others a convenient means to initiate instruction in this relatively-new coastaldesign methodology.PRINCIPLES OF WETLANDS DESIGNTechnical guidelines and procedures concerning various aspects of wetlands design and con-struction have been published by government agencies and others. marketing functions. The North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) hasled industry efforts to make a transition to the regional coordination of system security functions.Regional coordination may require establishing an "independent system operator" to achieveeconomic power exchanges and reduce line loading problems. Several states, includingCalifornia, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, have already committed to new legislation and/orhave introduced regulatory reforms. The other states are following close behind withderegulation and restructuring proposals.A great deal of attention has been focused on the economic and public policy implications ofelectric power industry restructuring, and in the wake of the Western system power outages

Session 1648 YOU, TOO, CAN FIND THAT JOB YOU WANT! Peter Biegel, Jeff Griffin, Ron Goodnight Purdue UniversityABSTRACTFinding the ‘right’ job in the ‘right’ location and the ‘right’ time by already employed technicalpersonnel can be an overwhelming task. If any student desires a job change or a career move, and is employed, he/she just does not have the time and is usually lacking the know-how to find‘that’ job. At Purdue University, Organizational Leadership and Supervision Department, aProfessional Development course is offered to help equip these students with the

IUPUI is a non-residential, commuting campus serving primarily non-traditionalworking students who live in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.University administration actively supports course offerings via traditional on-campus locations,off-campus sites in the metropolitan area, correspondence courses, and course offerings via localcable outlets. Recently, research into distance education, both process and product, has beenstrongly encouraged by the administration. Stage Four of the departmental curriculumreengineering effort began during 1997. Web based examinations were introduced in theintroductory Systems Analysis and

-ended laboratory assignments were introduced to stimulate thinking and to add designcontent. Integration with other engineering courses was carefully considered. Improvements inthe classroom lectures and laboratory assignments were made. St. Ambrose University’s industrial engineering program is small and operates on alimited budget. The small budget presented a particularly difficult challenge in determiningwhich equipment and software to use or purchase. Course development has been financedthrough creative use of existing laboratory equipment, internal department funding, facultyredevelopment initiatives, educational discounts for software products, in-kind gifts, and low costupgrades of existing laboratory computers. It was discovered

University of ToledoINTRODUCTIONApproaching a new century, increasing world-wide industrial and technological competitivenessdemands excellence in engineering and technical education. The U.S. is priviledged to enjoy theeconomic and technological advances required to excel in global competition. Therefore, youngpeople from around the world come to this country for studying and training at universities and othereducational institutes to prepare themselves for future leadership roles in science and engineering.Their educational and cultural experiences gained in the U.S. will assist them in enabling their nativecountries to compete in global enterprises.During the mid-1990's, a significant portion of the engineering student population in the U.S

2I. INTRODUCTIONToday the world is facing unprecedented challenges in almost every field. At the sametime new information transfer systems and technologies are bursting forth. Teaching is adomain that has developed and changed slowly across history. Today, however, teachingis facing new challenges and opportunities due to these new information transfer systems.Teaching per say is not the question. The question is transferring knowledge. This paperdescribes the use of World Wide Web (WWW) technology as a tool to improve thequality and efficiency of transferring knowledge. The teaching delivery method has a great impact on the amount of knowledge transferredfrom the teacher to the student. There is ample evidence that some delivery

The separation ofseveral environmental engineering programs from civil engineering has also led to thedevelopment of four-year environmental engineering technology programs leading to a Bachelorof Science degree. In Who’s Who in Environmental Engineering (AAEE, 1997), 16 schoolswere listed as having ABET accredited environmental engineering or related programs, and 5schools were listed as having accredited environmental engineering options within the civilengineering programs. Only three environmental engineering technology programs were listed asbeing accredited, and since publication, two of the three technology programs have converted toengineering programs. Session 1639 ECONOMICS FOR ENGINEERS: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH Dr. Wayne E. Wells The University of Texas at Brownsville ABSTRACT Engineers are the principal decision-makers who influence the profitability of firms, whether they are involved in manufacturing, construction or service industries. However, mostconventional courses in engineering economy do not deal with the breadth of issues engineerswill face in practice. This paper describes a revised approach to teaching Economics forEngineers rather than the more limited Engineering Economy. Case

Thelong term modules are designed to be taught over the course of several weeks, and the short termmodules are designed to be taught in a couple of hours. The module topics range from building strong composite structures to tall towers. The way themodules are structured is that the engineering topic is introduced, students brainstorm ideas, students are broken up into groups and given materials. Engineering design concepts areintroduced and the high school students start building their project. All projects are tested andthe engineering designs are discussed with the students.A small group of
