These were endorsed by the faculty participating in an ad-hoc onlinesteering committee at the university. While not formally endorsed by faculty governance, thesedocuments have been provided to all instructors teaching online since that time and thoseinstructors have indicated that both documents are helpful resources. The best practices tool provides faculty with guidance on online delivery and setting up theircourse site. It focuses on eight areas designed for faculty to check when developing or updatingtheir online course. The areas are: 1. Course Organization and Introduction 2. Syllabus and Schedule 3. The finalreports are run through “Turnitin” in order to ensure that the reports are original work of the students.Capstone ProjectA hardware centered capstone project is another important component of this course. Through the firstthree modules, the students work in a team, brainstorm, identify, and analyze significant problems thatdemand electrical engineering technology solutions. During the first week of each module, studentsdevelop and submit individual draft reports of the work carried out and results obtained. Theinstructor/mentor gives feedback

This administrator, or Capstone Coordinator, worked withdepartmental representatives to create a syllabus, schedule, and assessment tools and methods forthe course. Students were required to select materials with certaindimensions for five major components of the airframe, including rib, body spar, engine mount, payload box, and wing spar. Each component has different loading conditions and designrequirements which were described in each assignment. The project includes totally threeassignments: 1) Material selection based on mechanics calculation of the material propertiesfrom online

Adams et al. utilized Schon’s reflectivepractitioner theory as a lens to understand and measure reflective practitioner behavior inengineering students engaged in design activities.1,16 Chen proposed using online tools such asWikis and Weblogs and a technique called Folio Thinking, to support reflective learning in anintroductory engineering design course.17 Folio Thinking is a pedagogical approach wherestudents create learning portfolios, with the end goal being to enhance students’ self-awarenessof their knowledge by making it explicit and visible for themselves as well as for others. technology has changed cheating in face to face classes, it has also affected the potential forcheating in online classes12, 13. Malesky, Baley, and Crow14 conducted an experiment todetermine if instructors could identify a student cheating by contracting out an online course to aringer supplied by a commercial cheating company. They created a pseudo-online course co-taught by two experienced online instructors and recruited students who had already taken thecourse to participate as students for research experience and/or honors credit. All the studentswere assigned aliases, false student ID numbers, and new email addresses by the university. Oneof the students was directed to contact a cheating company, provide the syllabus, and hire themto

In the biotransport course studied here, students reported lackof preparation for class discussions even though they recognized the benefit of low-stakespractice problems and online resources and even though learning goals and rationale werediscussed in class and the interactive online syllabus. Instructor involvement with studentsduring their interaction with course material would perhaps help students feel less confused andoverwhelmed by the new, heavily quantitative material in this course. It becomes especially important for instructors to articulate clearly the rationale and goals behindexpectations for students to initiate and direct their own learning

Several survey respondents also suggested that several softwareprograms should be considered when teaching students about drainage within the context ofhighway design, such as the Federal Highway Administration’s HY-8, the Army Corp ofEngineers’ HEC-RAS, and AutoCAD Storm Sewers. It was also noteworthy that capacity and level-of-service ranked in the bottom third of topicsamong employers, especially considering Beyerlein (2010) found traffic flow characteristics andcapacity studies to be rated very high among topics that

Yet they are often reactive in nature as they are generallyutilized by students only after they have already begun to struggle academically and/or haveexperienced disappointment in engineering.Temple’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) has sought to reframe the problem toaddress possible underlying issues around course design and pedagogical choices that maycontribute to student failure and attrition. With the support of the Vice Provost forUndergraduate Studies, the CAT created Project SOAR (Student-Oriented Active Redesign), ayear-long course redesign

Many schools have moved to online orhybrid instructional models for developmental mathematics. These models work very well formany students, but not at all for others. At Clemson University, all STEM majors who are notyet calculus ready take precalculus under a self-paced hybrid course model that includes an asyn-chronous online component using ALEKS R (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces)and a face-to-face component with targeted direct instruction in small groups. The ALEKS R software allows students to master objectives at their own pace following an

instructorsoften lower the rigor of teaching a course in an abbreviated semester that results in increasedstudent performance. But this was not the case for the present study; the syllabus, teaching method, and evaluation methods adopted by the instructor were exactly the same for both Spring andminimester sessions.A shortcoming of this study could be that it was not controlled for student demographics. However, the author did not observe any significant difference either in age or ethnic difference between thetwo groups of students, except for gender. The percentage of female students in the compressedsemesters was about 16 and that in the regular semesters was 10. But it is doubtful whether thisfactor would be responsible for enhanced student performance

learning opportunities, while educationaltechnologies such as online videos are used to deliver content outside of the classroom. In thetraditional model of classroom instruction, the teacher is the focus of a lesson and the primarybase of information during the class period. Professors have used the flipped classroom modelfor years. Humanities instructors expect students to read on their own and rarely dedicate anyclass time to covering the basic storyline or narrative. Instead, class time is committed todiscussing themes. Some professors use the Socratic Method in their courses, requiring studentsto study the material before class or face a volley of questions. On the other hand, STEMdisciplines are traditionally taught by disseminating

This decision was based on several factors: (1) the visual appeal of thistextbook’s images and emphasis on clear explanation to beginners; (2) the rich online contentprovided with this text in the form of demonstration videos, problem solving videos, andMecMovies; (3) cost savings by selecting a single textbook which would provide necessaryreference for two courses; and (4) a deep library of faculty generated statics content.SEQUENCE OF COURSESOne important aspect of this course redesign was that MC300 and MC364 be maintained as asequence of courses and this sequence be as obvious to students as possible. Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Design TeamsIntroductionProject management, a course/field that aims to teach students the application of knowledge, skillsand techniques to project activities to meet project requirements, is popular among a variety ofprofessions. Project management courses are often taught online, or in short-course format with aseries of extended lectures with little to no application.Emerging evidence from research on teaching methods strongly indicates that active learningmethods lead to better educational outcomes than standard lecture methods (Wieman, 2014).Further, it has been shown that a project-based learning approach is effective at teaching projectmanagement concepts (Keser and Karahoca, 2010
