(Fundamentals of Materials Science) that lays thefoundation for the mechanical and capstone design courses. Thus, it is paramount to the facultythat through this course, students gain a solid understanding as to how the materials selection andprocessing will ultimately affect their final product. Granta CES EduPack is a comprehensivematerials science software program that is available to the students at the junior and senior levelwithin the ME program. In past offerings, CES EduPack has been introduced at the end of thecourse at a basic level to introduce the students to concepts of materials selection. Prior studentshave not considered the software as a tool for materials selection in their mechanical design andcapstone projects in the past, likely

learned in the introductory Excel class were aimed at solving problems during therecitations but soon proved very effective to other engineering courses and beyond. This paperdiscusses the Excel introductory portion of the class, the content delivered, some examples ofproblems solved, and finally the students’ feedback through the survey administered. The paper begins with a presentation of the topics covered during the Excel Introductorycourse. Two examples illustrate the applications completed by the students for their projects. The last part includes a discussion of the results and a conclusion.Excel Introductory Course Topics and Survey Setup A five-hour’ introductory class of Excel was first taught before the actual

in the United States, and in thefield of engineering specifically. Within the engineering culture of depoliticization, or the beliefthat social issues can be separated from the technical issues of engineering, a person’s sexual andgender identities fall squarely on the social side of the technical/social duality so it is consideredirrelevant [36] - [37]. Yet for individuals whose minority status within engineering is visuallyclear, such as women and many ethnic or racial groups, their physical presence has made themdifficult to ignore completely [36]. Therefore, through decades of concerted efforts, theexperiences of women and ethnic/racial minorities have become part of the discussion ofengineering culture and the need for change to make

time is not critical, and the reverse bias voltage source was omitted for simplicity. One potential pitfall in this lab exercise is that the transimpedance amplifier is ringing, orunwanted oscillations. This ringing is a complex function of specifications of the operationalamplifier, the specifications of the photodiode, and the values of resistors and capacitors used inthe circuit [20]. The capacitors on the power supply are sometimes used to curb ringing effectsfor these circuits. An analysis of these ringing effects was beyond the scope of our course. Wewere able to find a combination of parameters that worked well enough to demonstrate thisconcept, but still some students had difficulties with their circuits ringing. This is likely a

I currently work for a utility on an EV charging pilot program and attempt to leave civilization as much as possible to recreate outdoors and explore.Colton Widell, Eastern Washington University I am currently a senior mechanical engineering student at Eastern Washington University graduating in March 2018. I am originally from Okanogan Washington where I learned to love math, science, and engineering through the great teachers at Okanogan High School. I have a passion for learning new engineering topics and applying them to real world applications. c American
