The benefitsSTEM students (particularly females and underrepresented minorities) have obtained fromundergraduate research experiences are well documented. The New York City College ofTechnology in partnership with the City College of New York have been offering a year-longresearch program to students who attend an institution within the City University of New Yorksystem. The dimensions of the CF cell and overall design of the spacers weremodified based on recent research development. Some of the changes included modification tothe inlet and outlet positions and chevron size within the CF cell. The CF cell model’sadjustments were made to better match the stainless steel CF cell more precisely as the primarycell for use in future experiments. The entire engineering design process was used to create themodel in SolidWorks that portrayed the hydrodynamic conditions within a CF
specific R&D effort.The product development effort was to research and design a software-based, 3-Band audioequalizer using MATLAB and was to be delivered to a real campus customers with a realdeadline. The deliverable was to demonstrate the product by applying it to adjust the audiotonality on mp3 music files in real-time at QCC’s Annual STEM Honors Conference.Our results showed this was a transformative experience for the student who acquired an acuteawareness of meeting customer schedules, product requirements, managing schedule slack, andpursuing design alternatives to mitigate risk of failure as defined by a missed customerdeadline. The overall learning effectiveness and design, as well as lessons learned, arediscussed, including future
