in the learning process, collaboration, and inductiveapproaches during class sessions. Highlighting applications at the start of class in connectionwith new topics being introduced can engage students and raise questions. For Circuits I, someexamples include showing (e.g., on a PowerPoint graphic or otherwise): a) different kinds ofpower sources and batteries used for industrial and consumer applications, motivating the need tomodel them with the help of an ideal electric source, b) a cutaway view of DC and/or AC motorsto do mechanical work that can elicit a question about the key electrical component(s) before asection on inductors, c) a professional audio mixer and circuitry that suggests a familiar audioapplication before analyzing op amp

, use NAND logic gates to wire a robotic carto follow a light, distill ethanol from water, separate ink pigments using chromatography, andanalyze the energy efficiency of a water-heating system. They also learn about materialproperties, forces in a truss, and error analysis, then they apply this knowledge to build a bridgeout of spaghetti and epoxy. This spaghetti bridge competition is the subject of this paper. In addition to labs and projects, three hour-long quizzes and a two-part final exam are used tomeasure student achievement of the learning objectives for each unit. Students who earn an A ora B earn three credits for the Johns Hopkins course “What is Engineering?” All students whocomplete the course earn a certificate of

used to make sure that the light on both lenses wasthe same. Since the sun was typically on one side, it would expose more light to one lens than theother, creating a visible box. Finally, the tripod holding the 360-camera had to be removed usinga clone stamp tool (Figure 3). The clone stamp allows you to take part of an image from one spotand duplicate it in another. The grass image was used to cover up the tripod. Once the tripod wasremoved, the videos were ready for the editing phase.Figure 2: Raw camera views (a) rear view and (b) front view. The videos were edited using Adobe Premiere Pro CC and CSS. To start the editing process, thevideos were first trimmed down to length. We used close-up clips or pictures to illustrate certainimportant
