At the two south valleycampuses, students will be primarily be assessed to identify the length to which FC-E-POGILpedagogy is successful in improving knowledge gains. . Thegoal is to improve students performance in early STEM courses and increase retention rate. Thecourses feature a calculus sequence that has been redesigned to coincide with the physics courses,and the mathematical concepts are introduced in the concept of physics problems with the goalof examining more abstract mathematical ideas once the concrete notions are formulated. Theprogram identifies students’ needs prior to enrollment using the physics and math scores. EffortStudent effort is known to be a significant predictor of performance on low-stakes tests [22].During ESO testing, proctors observed that some students testing in-class clicked throughquestions toward the end of the test, reflecting decreasing effort. Results from the ESO showed acorrelation between time spent on the core test components and final core score, suggesting thatstudent effort did impact achievement.However, previous work on PIAAC engagement suggests that the proportion of disengagedrespondents from Canada with educational attainment greater than high school is less than 5%[30]. Only 4.2% of the students in this sample were filtered out because of low time spent ontest, which aligns with this previous evaluation of disengaged

These student outcomesare based on documentation collected during the annual assessment process and represent acombination of direct and indirect measures, such as the performance of student work, FE examresults, formal survey data, as well as data of specific curriculum courses' completion. Thecourse of Thermodynamics represents a significant portion of the FE exam (~10%). In thisevidence-based practice study, students were tested weekly under the FE exam format (3 minutesper question, 4-5 questions) in a pre-set time interval.
