Guild workshop is based on a curriculum designed by the first and fifthauthors and is shown in Table 1. As illustrated, we included a number of exercises, topics, games,presentations, and opportunities for hands-on experience. The schedule was created such that allbasic technical skills were taught during the first two days of the workshop, and then on day 3 ofthe workshop, we included activities to help participants practice these skills.Our curriculum was devised to touch on interdisciplinary topics over different days, which couldappeal to a wide range of interests (i.e., art, music, community involvement). an opportunity to create computer based art. Assessment of learning was through pre- and post-testquestions . A total of eight students were involved in this study; four from middle school (grades 6, 7 and 8)and four from high school (grades 9 to 12).Assembly VLEsTen students interacted with the Assembly VLEs (5 middle school s, 5 high school). Among the middle schoolparticipants, 3 students were able to understand the target assembly concepts in the first round of learninginteractions; two of the students needed an additional round of learning interactions for learning the sameconcepts. previously expressed the cognitive and behavioral skills related to algorithmicthinking in the course when using instructor-build templates, almost all student teams opted tohard code the solution rather than engage in functional decomposition. For example, Team 1began by manually typing the census identifiers of interest to their project in a NumPy array of“magic numbers,” citing the specific rows in the dataset at which they found each of the values(Figure 3, Appendix A) (Kernighan & Ritchie, 1988). However, after receiving feedback fromthe instructors, the group rewrote their code in preparation for the R&R session, clearlydemonstrating their capacity for functional decomposition and strategic use of NumPy andPandas functions (Figure 4

are an issue of national security, financial andeconomic stability, and consumer confidence. Data breaches caused by these vulnerabilities canlead to interruptions in public services, monetary loss, and loss of privacy. The 2021 Verizon DataBreach Investigation Report [1] indicates that there were 3,950 data breaches in 2021 in the UnitedStates. Software vulnerabilities continue to increase as tracked by National Institute of Standardsand Technology (NIST) National Vulnerability Database [2] and MITRE Common Vulnerabilitiesand Exposures (CVEs) [3]. A 2021 report from Tenable, a leading IT vulnerability assessment andmanagement solution company, indicates that there were 21,957 vulnerabilities reported in 2021,a slight increase from the 18,358

typically workclosely with faculty and other researchers on a specific research project, and in some cases aregranted stipends [6]. Studies have shown that students who participate in REUs show increasedinterest in pursuing degrees and careers in the STEM fields [3]. REUs provide students withopportunities to develop skills valued by both graduate schools and employers, such as workingon challenging problems, presenting research to an audience, and communicating findingsthrough technical writing [3].While REUs have the potential to positively influence persistence in STEM fields, there areinequities in who gets to participate in these experiences.
