To provide thisportrait, the research team compromised on precision of direct measurements in favor of a

for all engineering and technologystudents while having the added benefit of fulfilling a general education requirement. Significantefforts are also made to encourage students to participate in the many study abroad opportunitiesoffered within the college to gain practical leadership skills within an international environment.During the junior year, students participate in core curriculum courses with a focus on team-based projects, faculty mentoring and undergraduate research experiences. Internships arerecognized as an important practical method for leadership development and the college providessignificant support to students seeking practical work experience with sponsoring companiesboth domestically internationally. relationship. It's more of a collaborative type relationship with the teams there.”Bethany’s job is centered on electrical engineering but also spans policy development andcommunity engagement. She started working at the organization during a one year internshipwhile studying electrical engineering. During that extended work term, she felt like she was“treated like a normal employee” and was given challenging technical modelling work. Duringslack time she took initiative, helped out on projects in other divisions, and ultimately wasrewarded by her boss with a complex and mission-critical modelling assignment. She excelledtechnically, and became so integral to the organization’s work that she negotiated to work part-time during the final year of

havedone so: Chemical Engineering (ChE) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). ChE hastried to distribute leadership topics throughout the existing curriculum and thereby still capturesome of the material. They have decided to require a different GE course in the stead of EngT231. ECE has made the course optional. Other units, so far, have decided to keep it as amandatory course. Whereas for some time teaching evaluations for the course were belowcollege averages, recently they have climbed to be above college averages. This is noteworthygiven that relatively large sections are taught of lower division students, there are 6-8 instructorsinvolved, and the course is required. A new college administration took over in 2016. They areinclined

example of complex modern design-based project in which students are engaged inlearning engineering through an authentic complex engineering design process. The main aim ofthe competition is to produce an energy-efficient vehicle promoting sustainable engineeringthinking and environmental awareness at an early stage of future engineers’ career. Furthermore,SEM is a competition that normally requires interdisciplinary team composed of mechanical, electrical, and sometimes other fields of engineering. Figure (1) shows a developed vehicle inQatar University for the SEM competition of 2014.In The SEM design phase of the vehicles, students work to design the car from scratch, build itand then test it which may take about a year sometimes. At the end

As a Mechanical Engineer, she worked on facil- ity design projects involving mechanical systems that included heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and energy conservation systems, as well as R&D of air conditioning equipment for Navy ships. Additional research interests have included the investigation of relationships among components of the indoor envi- ronment, occupants, and energy usage. Specifically, the effects of the indoor environment on occupant health and well-being and in parallel, how socially-mediated energy-saving strategies can increase aware- ness of energy

questionnaire.Self-Rating of Engineering Leadership Skills. The second part of the survey included a skillsquestionnaire that was developed based on the survey instrument created by Ahn et al.3. Ahnet al.’s survey contained 45 items specifically designed to measure outcomes in engineeringundergraduate students related to leadership, adaptability to change, and synthesis abilities3.Twenty of these items, principally the ones directly related to leadership, were chosen for theskills questionnaire (e.g. I independently initiate new individual or team projects and Imanage and organize my time efficiently). The participants were asked to rank the extent towhich they embodied each statement on a scale of one to four (1=rarely, 2=sometimes,3=frequently and 4

social media literacy will bemore creative, more effective in collaborating across organizational boundaries, and rewardedwith a competitive advantage. These six dimensions provide a lens through which informationgenerated by this study can be viewed. For engineering education to remain relevant to the needs of industry, it seems logical to looktowards state-of-the-art leadership tools being deployed by General Electric, one of the world’slargest engineering companies. In addition, developing instructional activities for futureengineers should also be guided by fundamental understandings of leadership and engineering-leadership development. The theoretical framework for the instructional activities described in this study is the socialchange model
