95In June 2016, the director of DiSC and the Engineering Librarian met with the DAEN ProgramDirector to discuss the program and student needs, especially related to finding and accessingdata. This meeting helped us gain a better understanding of the program beyond what waspublished on its website, and we were made aware of their plans. Around this time, just asDAEN enrollment was increasing, DiSC witnessed an uptick in consultations with and lab visitsfrom students. Not surprisingly, this trend was in line with DAEN enrollment growth. We observed that DAEN students often had a different approach to data needs and data questionsthan students and researchers in other areas of study. Up to this point, DiSC data consultationswere predominantly with

AtNorth Carolina State University (NCSU), engineering librarians have been building a curriculumintegrated instruction program within the College of Engineering over the last four years. Thispaper describes the ongoing collaboration between the NCSU Libraries and the Department ofChemical and Biomolecular Engineering to build information skills into the curriculum, detailingspecific assignments and grading methods. Continuous Improvement Process for a Library Instruction ProgramAbstractThe library education team at Michigan Technological University, an engineering-focuseduniversity, is developing a multifaceted process for assessment of our information literacyinstruction program in order to continuously improve our teaching and related activities. Themajority of library instruction sessions are 50-minute, one-shot classes with little or no follow-upfrom the faculty or students involved; as such, the efficacy of library instruction programs can bedifficult to measure. In addition to already existing rubric-based information literacy assessmentsof student work, the education team is establishing a suite of accompanying methods

We should build on what students already know, and givethem authentic problems to work on.10 Active learning is a central tenet of constructivism, and aguiding principle for our instruction program. We started the ES 1000 instruction session byasking students how many of them start their research with Google. By a show of hands, wecould easily see that (as expected), the majority of students start there. Using a student-chosenresearch question, we demonstrated a search in Google, and then showed students how to use theGoogle Wonder Wheel to identify related topics and additional keywords. Summer Engineering Experience for Girls (SEE): An Evolving Hands-On Role for the Engineering LibrarianAbstractThe summer of 2009 marked the third year that the EQT Corporation sponsored a two-week Summer Engineering Experience for Girls (SEE) at Carnegie Mellon University. The program’s goal is to provide junior high girls the opportunity to learn of the appeal ofengineering as a career choice by demonstrating how engineering contributions make theworld “a better place.” The girls complete an application and attach a copy of their latestreport card, a teacher recommendation form, and a one page essay explaining theirinterest in SEE. Twenty+ participants per year attend the July program free of charge.Librarians are invited to
