research makes the case that curriculum improvements andfirsthand learning in the classroom can raise retention rates [2].One of the core subjects in most scientific degrees and all electrical engineering programs is digitalelectronics [3]. Digital electronics forms the foundation of modern technology, enabling the designand function of computers, smartphones, and countless other devices. Issues arising from thecomplexity of concepts, teaching methods, and course structure contribute to challenges faced bystudents. Resources and approaches are available to ease learning in this area. The study of digitalelectronics involves electronic circuits used to process and control digital signals, with a focus onthe design process of combinational and

Theresulting course curriculum is being classroom tested in Spring 2023.IntroductionMeasurement and data analysis are essential topics in engineering education, as they providestudents with the skills needed to acquire, process, and interpret data. However, designing ormodifying a course on these topics can be challenging due to competing priorities such asmeeting learning objectives related to breadth vs. depth, ABET criteria, preparing studentsfor the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and maintaining within-institution courseequivalencies. This work describes an approach to navigating these competing prioritieswhen redesigning an upper-division measurements and

Students declare concentrationswithin the general engineering degree, and for the students represented in these data, nine weremechanical concentration while two were materials concentration. As this is the final laboratorycourse in the curriculum, students are expected to demonstrate independence in applying contentknowledge from previous courses and the ability to use experimental equipment. The technical intensity of engineering curricula poseschallenges in dedicating courses exclusively to design thinking or applying the design process. An alternative approach is to reimagine laboratory courses by incorporating engineering design. This pilot study explored the integration of engineering design principles in a required 14-week'engineering analysis and design' laboratory course for second-year mechanical engineeringstudents. The course combines lectures with hands-on laboratory sessions, covering topics suchas gears, motors, dynamics, hydraulics, and engines. The course also introduces Ulrich andEppinger's engineering design process and

Specifically, we will examine flowcharacterization curves and demonstrate how these experiments can be effectively integrated intoa blended learning curriculum. By doing so, we hope to provide a compelling argument for thevalue of blended and online learning in engineering education and practical insights into how itcan be successfully implemented in the chemical engineering field.2. Background2.1 Blended Learning in Chemical EngineeringLaboratories. Blended learning has been recognized as aneffective approach for accommodating diverse studentpopulations and adding value to the learning environmentthrough the incorporation of online teaching resources [19].As shown in

Therefore, we feel the need for creativeinstructional strategies to ensure that these requirements extend beyond the boundaries oftraditional course objectives.According to the American Chemical Society’s guidelines on laboratory curriculum and skills, the primary imperative in laboratory instruction is to enable students to understand how to"connect experiment to theory" [3]. Numerous prior studies have indicated that traditionalcookbook-style experiments generally offer a lower level of inquiry for students compared totheir open-ended counterparts [4-7]. When

Engineering faculty cancreate a more engaging and effective learning environment in their courses by incorporatingsome of the strategies used in this study.Due to the small sample size, it is challenging to make conclusive recommendations based on theobservations. The results of this study, limited to the data from 2020-2022, should not begeneralized to broader conclusions. Further data collection and analysis over several more courseofferings are necessary to draw informative conclusions. Future studies should encompassdifferent courses with larger sample sizes.References[1] Barkley, E.F, Gross, K.P., Major, C.H., Collaborative Learning Techniques: A Handbook forCollege Faculty, San

However, such an approach mighthinder the development of essential skills associated with labs in engineering education.Among these skills, one might cite communication and collaboration, safety, designingexperiments, and learning from failure. Furthermore, a common critique regarding virtual labsrefers to the use of idealized data that usually does not reflect the uncertainties and nuances ofthe real world [10].
