Engineering component of AIM.There were several factors that influenced the decision to replace ARoW. This sectionwill address those motivations.ARoW was resource intensive. One team kit consisted of several hundred parts,including motors, a radio controller, mixer and receivers, as well as tools. Each kit wascontained in four cases, stored in a 20 cubic foot bin. In addition to the kits used byparticipants, there were pool liners and lumber for the pools, tarps and rolls of carpet toplace the pools on, pumps and other support materials. After every use, parts needed tobe replaced and/or repaired. The size of the kits and support equipment meant specialarrangements were required to ship kits for outreach activities. This mode of online learningcan occur completely asynchronously, but studies have shown that it is beneficial to have asynchronous component that allows students to ask questions and interact [3, p. 406]. Institutionscan realize significant cost savings with fully online courses since material can be reused andgrading is often fully automated. Faculty also have time to pursue other research efforts oncethey develop a fully online course [5, p. 13]. Depending on the course structure, fully onlinecourses provide significant flexibility to the students and puts the onus on them to learn thematerial. This increases active learning and students should show greater mastery of keyconcepts than they would in a traditional classroom
