. Empirical evidence demonstrates that writing revealsthinking in the writer and improves metacognition in students [2]-[4], which has been shown tobe an essential aspect of developing discipline-specific knowledge [5]. Researchers haveverified this finding specifically for engineering students [6]-[7]. Indeed, metacognitive abilitiescan explain the difference between high-performing and low-performing students [8]. Writing skills within discipline-specific contexts are best learned by diligent practicewithin those contexts [5], and so writing in the engineering context is best learned by studentswithin engineering classes [9]. Yet the common provision among engineering educators is tooutsource writing instruction by requiring students to take

But at the same time, I have a lot of friends, female friends who are women in [STEM] who are blond and blue eyed, and they're taken a lot less seriously and undermined a lot more than I am as an Asian American woman, just because of these inherent, implicit biases people have. This story highlights the different types of visible intersectional demographics that might attractvarious forms of microaggressions. Study description and Methods2.1 The Academic Pathways StudyThe Academic Pathways Study (APS) is an NSF-funded, on-going, longitudinal, person-centeredethnography27, currently in its fourth year of data collection. Its purpose is to studyundergraduate engineering education, and seeks to understand students’ development asengineers by attending to three facets of their development: first the content knowledge they gainin formal and informal settings; second how they (and others) come to identify themselves asengineers; and

We were initially skeptical of onlinecourses in general – concerned about how the integrity of the exam taking process could becontrolled, how rigorous the assessments could be in an online course, how students could reallylearn material like that online, etc. After speaking with the facilitating professor of the course,we concluded that if a student passed the course, they would be prepared for our curriculum andwe accepted the course for transfer credit. Exams were similar in content and format to ours andwere mailed to the professor at the university for grading after students took them on paper at atesting

The purpose of this research is to develop a rich, empiricalunderstanding of engineering students’ lived experiences of HSB ensuring the perspective ofunderrepresented groups. Self-efficacy (SE) and self-theory of intelligence (STOI) wereexamined as inputs into HSB.This qualitative research is based on interviews of students’ perceptions and constant-comparative techniques drawn from grounded theory. A multi-approach sampling method wasused to ensure varied experiences, equal gender, and ethnic diversity. Results indicate adiversity of themes related to SE and STOI as

resultshave direct implications for engineering curriculum design and teaching practices; in short, it iscritical that students are given reasonably difficult tasks that incorporate physical testing, aregiven time for multiple iteration cycles, and are supported as they design.IntroductionEngineering educators seek to engage learners in authentic engineering practices, includingtesting and iterating on designs (NAE and NRC, 2009). Failure is an integral part of the iterationcycle in the engineering design process; designs often fail, that is, do not meet all criteria andconstraints, and a central disciplinary practice in engineering is interpreting this failure asfeedback on those designs (Lottero-Perdue & Parry, 2014; Cunningham & Carlsen

This involves conducting patent searches, finding material to supplement case studies, and researching technical principles, and investigatingproduct development outside the textbook. For example, data from the National Assessment of Education Progress examspoints to a continued gap in scores at the 4th, 8th, and 12th grade levels between 1990 and 2007.Black 4thgraders were able to slightly close the gap.7 Too, students from

variables were standardizedto have a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one.For all three HLM models, an unconditional model was also developed which contained only anoutcome variable (perceptions of faculty support, perceptions of TA support, and positiveemotional engagement) without any independent variables. This simple multilevel model isstatistically equivalent to a one-way random effects analysis of variance (ANOVA). Further, theunconditional model decomposes the total variance in each outcome variable into a varianceattributable to student-level factors and another variance that can be explained by class-levelfactors. Starting with unconditional models allows for determining whether or not there issystematic variation in the outcome

English do not have the Englishlanguage communication abilities (and corresponding TOEFL scores) required by the institutionto which they have applied. In such cases students are sometimes required to enroll in intensivelanguage courses to prepare them for eventual admission to the university. The focus of anIntensive English Program (IEP) is to increase student proficiency in English speaking, reading, and writing, and ultimately, to help the student develop the communication skills (and TOEFLscore) required for matriculation at the university as a degree-seeking student. IEPs are generallyadministered by the university that students wish to enroll in following their intensive Englishstudies. Coursework taken by students during their time in IEP
