instruments for assessing engineeringstudents’ motivational attitudes and behaviors in their capstone design course. Motivation plays akey role in engineering practice, particularly with respect to students’ efficiency andeffectiveness as well as their readiness to engage in teamwork either in the capstone course or theworkplace. The 2013 ASEE report on Transforming Undergraduate Education of Engineers hasidentified fifteen personal and professional abilities to be developed in engineering graduates,one of which is motivation. ?" David Foster Wallace, and others This research proposes to study the production of an educational problem: that ofstudents deemed “not cut out for” undergraduate engineering. To understand the struggles ofstudents and create a system that produces successful, not failing, students is at the heart of mucheducational research. But there are different ways of doing research, and they differ in the extentto which they treat the “problem” as the phenomenon of interest. Our research attempts to take afamiliar educational problem and to grapple with it in an unusual way, by focusing on the manymechanisms by which the problem is culturally produced.
