materials, fabrication, testing, and measurements. Studentsare required to analyze, design, simulate, and build a completely functional system by the end-of-term project. The goal of the class project was to enhance student understanding of the fundamentalconcept of design-for-environment (dfE) and hands-on team project learning in green energymanufacturing. Students understood the design for the environment by improving and optimizingthe environmental performance of products, impact on human health, associated energy, andmaterial and process costs. Students commented that they enjoyed working in such green energymanufacturing project with hands-on laboratory experiments. Students commented that theyenjoyed working in the LCA virtual laboratory

This leaves the student to feel that calculus is unimportant and strictly a “weeder”class due to the high failure rate. At the Colorado school of Mines, the integration of courses istaken one step further where integrated laboratories replace traditional laboratories in electricalcircuits, fluid mechanics, and stress analysis.1 The laboratory experiments are designed tocombine math and physics and require students to build and analyze small, laboratory scalesystems. Creating integrated labs have been the premise of many other studies in bothengineering and

courseAbstractTraditional “follow-the-steps” laboratories associated with many engineering courses havelimited learning benefits and poorly prepare students to design or conduct experiments asmandated by ABET criterion 3b. The laboratory section of our junior-level MedicalElectronics course was redesigned based on the inquiry-based approach. In this approach, thegoal of the experiment is specified, but to a large extent, the students devise the experimentalprocedures with limited guidance from the instructor. For each assignment of ourlaboratories, students were tasked to design an electronic circuit or an experiment tocharacterize an electronic component. Students received primary sources such as applicationnotes and data sheets, as well as a few questions to

During a PandemicAbstractExperiments form the backbone of much of engineering education, but because it is not alwayspossible to do them in person, simulations can provide a powerful alternative to assist studentlearning. We present data from two versions of two chemical engineering courses where in-person labs pivoted to virtual simulated experiments. In the first-year introduction to chemicalengineering course we designed a simulation for students to design and then test a bench-scaleprototype of a remediation column for acid mine drainage. In the junior-level chemicalengineering laboratory—students typically carry out a bomb calorimetry experiment of sucroseand then analyze their data. We created a simulation based on a combination of

Students enrolled in these RocketProject (RP) classes design, build, flight test, and analyze model rockets through hands-onexercises designed to enhance their awareness of topical connectivity across the mechanicalengineering curriculum. These activities challenge students to work on different aspects of thesame rocket project across all four years of their degree program. Our method is to redesign discrete laboratory exercises in five required mechanical engineeringcourses to integrate the rocket project within our existing curriculum without need foradministrative changes (i.e., no course catalog changes). At the end of each RP class, studentsevaluate the rockets or flight simulations they created, analyze their design decisions andassumptions

Examples of these changesinclude movement away from providing experiments to the teachers and toward teacher-developed experiments, the development and use of design-based experiments, and increased useof engineering professors in summer institutes and follow-up activities. This paper highlightsprogram developments and their impacts throughout the three year history of UASPP, andpresents the format for new activities as the program moves into its next three years.IntroductionThe National Science Foundation has recognized the

Labs areoften one of the college learning experiences that students enjoy the most. As lab courseinstructors, we strive to create learning environments in which students experience maximumbenefit from their labs. We recognize the complexity of creating rich environments for learning, and know the enormous amount of work it takes to create and run high quality laboratoryexperiments. There are ample

Understanding the role of contextual aspects extends ourknowledge of design requirements for specific content types and difficulty levels. As Lynchand Ghergulescu [15] highlight, there is no one-size-fits-all for VR lab instructional design. Therefore, effective VR laboratory design environments are heavily dependent on ouridentification and exploration of influencing factors for diverse students' learningexperiences.Studies that explore situations in which learners get multiple exposure to learning in VRenvironments are needed to better understand the effect of different contextual factors on VRlearning

A carbonfootprint study was undertaken to enable a data-driven laboratory experiment design to reduce carbonfootprint by selecting an efficient feedstock for the fermentation process. In the undergraduate laboratory curriculum, refined sugar is the most common feedstock used inbioethanol production. In this study, the student team also investigated another alternative feedstock of cornsyrup based on the bioethanol conversion/yield4,5. Studies have shown that the amount of CO2 generatedfrom the chemical processes is directly proportional to the conversion rate 3. Since corn syrup contains morecomplex sugar, the lag phase is
