student performance at an undergraduate level is affected byshowing related video clips in a classroom situation, supplemented by presentation of coursematerials in a traditional format. It was attempted to determine whether watching videos had an effect on cumulative test grade ofa student on mechanical and electrical construction course. It was also critical to find out whetherthis relationship, if any, existed in the presence of other possible determinants of studentperformance. higher education are identifying the vitiating effects of neoliberalism in education as abusiness mindset dominates and minimizes the loftier goals of higher education. If we want toforestall that continued progression, the engineering education community will need to be moreconscientious about the impacts that these shifts are having on students, faculty, departments, and colleges.Of course, as alluded to with the mention of societal trends, this is more than just themaneuvering of university administrators or private corporations. This is a perennial struggleover institutional ideals and existential purpose. It is a societal shift that has continued sinceneoliberalism gained traction in the 1970s following the stagflation in the Western world

Allidentified course codes and titles were compiled, as well as any available syllabi and instructorcontact information.Instructor InterviewsFollowing the course inventory, available contact information was used to reach out to allidentified instructors listed to be teaching the timber or mass timber focused coursework withincivil engineering. Structured interviews were then conducted to better understand the content ofthe courses being taught, the resources used, and what gaps prohibit effective instruction oftimber and mass timber courses, and where there are opportunities for further improvements

This guidance takes avariety of forms, including in-class presentations on poster composition by Studio staff, consultation with individual students and student teams, and faculty feedback on poster drafts.Because of the C-I course requirement that faculty give feedback on drafts of major projects sothat students have opportunities for effective revisions, students in C-I courses receive clearguidance on grading criteria for each specific assignment, as well as an improved understandingof conventions of visual communication in technical fields. The posters provide an opportunity for the students to illustrate and

performance and their self-assessment abilities. Results show that the correlation between student KS scores and their grades on each ofthe three unit exams in the course improves with each successive cycle of performance andfeedback. We also examined the self-assessment ability of the student cohort by upper and lowerhalves of cumulative GPA, measured as of the semester prior to taking Fundamental Hydraulics. These data show that students in the upper half by GPA maintained consistent self-assessmentaccuracy through the three exams while students in the lower half by GPA improved their self-assessment accuracy by the third exam. Finally, we examined whether student performanceimproved in conjunction with the improvement in self-assessment

develop a perception of fairness. The commentary, however, neglects the potential for retakes to be a valuable tool to promote continued learning, and ultimately improve student achievement. In fact, retesting is a key component of bothKeller’s [2] and Bloom’s [3] methods of instruction, and through many research studies retestinghas been shown to be an effective learning tool.Bostow and O’Connor [4] divided their educational psychology class into two groups of students(N1=20, N2=21); the remedial group was allowed to retake the weekly quizzes, and the non-remedial group was not. The pre-test scores of the two groups were comparable, and nosignificant difference was found between the mean scores of the groups on the initial quizattempts. For those

ConclusionThe potential of a new civil engineering curriculum with a freshmen Design and Engineeringcourse and a senior year Group Project course to improve the transferability of learned skills wasexamined in this study. The skill sets acquired by a cohort of sixty students during freshmen Designand Engineering did not manifest well in the project exercises undertaken independently by themin the senior year Group Project, though they had excelled in the training provided for thetransferability aspect through the course Design and Engineering. The study results have indicateda misalignment between the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor

additional time and effort is required tohave a successful outcome. Instructors should alert students about cross-disciplinary courseactivities before the semester begins to ensure they can devote the necessary time andcommitment to the team project [10].The collaborating instructors must model effective team collaboration for their students. It isvital for the instructors to put in extra time teaching each other about their disciplines, developing and refining course structure, and monitoring the student experience throughout thecourse [7, 8, 11, 12]. Clear communication of their individual course objectives during theplanning and implementation phases ensures both instructors achieve their learning goals [10].This paper describes the experience of

theattention that SET garners. Peer review has been proposed as a possibility for both formative andsummative assessment,12,13 in part because fellow faculty members are often able to evaluate aninstructor in ways that students are not able (for example, the instructor’s familiarity with thecourse material and whether the course is meeting its curricular goals). However, such evaluationprograms require a fair amount of planning and discussion amongst the faculty. One of thegreatest challenges is that all faculty do not hold identical views about what effective teaching is,leading to potential conflicts in assessment.Another alternative to SET is classroom observations by a so-called “expert,” frequently anadministrator or member of a Center for

assertiveness. Oneway to become a better communicator and team member is to understand that people havedistinct, preferred, and predictable ways of communicating. Other instructors have incorporatedMyers-Briggs or similar personality assessment exercises into their capstone design courses tohelp improve team communication and performance.3,4 We decided to use a similar (but simpler)approach whereby the students assess their own "communication styles," which are basedprimarily on the degree to which the individual is assertive and outgoing.5,6 Under this approach,a student assesses his or her communication style by completing a short self-assessment survey, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. A copy of this survey is included at the end of this paper

While muchresearch has evaluated the efficacy of these equation sheets on student performance, thereremains a gap in understanding the effects of the quality of the equation sheets on examperformance. This study analyzes the relationship between and quantitative evaluation of studentgenerated equations sheets and exam performance on a particular graded event in a course in acivil engineering program of study.Students at the United

ensuring students havedone readings for a class and retained knowledge from previous classes. Such quizzes have beenshown to improve students’ scores on future assessments of the same material when the quizzeswere administered a few days after reading the material [32]-[34]. This continual retrieval ofcourse material helps with long term retention [35], and these types of quizzes can also helpreview previous material while providing guidance for a student if they have not mastered a topicand need additional help [36]. Another common use of in-class pre- and post-quizzes throughouta semester is to strategically measure gains in knowledge in the class. This helps determine theefficacy of the course when considering what materials to cover [37

Design coursesfor two of these materials are offered at nearly all the colleges and universities in the UnitedStates, while only half of these institutions offer a course on the third [1]. A recent survey by theNational Council of Structural Engineers Association (NCSEA) found that only 52% ofprograms offered wood design, with most of those institutions only offering it once every twoyears [2]. The lack of wood design education is not limited to the United States. Canada,Germany, and Australia have also identified shortcomings in civil engineering education, specifically focused on wood

It is anticipated that the study will contribute valuable knowledge to facilitatethe improvement of student writing in STEM fields. As the cost of higher education increases, institutions are pressured to graduate students in fouryears while engineering curricula are becoming more complex. WATTS presents an economical, effective method to improve student writing in the discipline. Several factors indicate that it hasthe potential for broad dissemination and impact and will provide a foundation for a sustainablemodel for future work as instructors become trainers for their colleagues, allowing additionalongoing expansion and

Students will receive the message that errors incommunication are important to their lives as engineers and improvements will begin. It does not require a great deal of effort to survey the attitudes of faculty and students alike togain insight into where problems are perceived. Organizing the department into groups that canaddress elements of concern will do much in both changing attitudes and creating better technicalcommunicators. With a very small amount of effort, faculty members and graduate students can make commentsthat will ultimately influence undergraduates to understand that there is something more thantechnical knowledge to be addressed
