People who takean interdisciplinary approach can easily identify and evaluate opportunities, explore theseopportunities, and create solutions that provide value to the stakeholders. potential to provide insight into the effectiveness ofTCNJ’s comprehensive approach. Research has been conducted to understand the impact of various curricular innovations,engineering identity, and inclusivity for historically underrepresented groups (such as women,low income students, and men of color) on engineering persistence (Cech 2015; Foor & Walden2009; Nadelson 2014; Pierrakos et al 2009). To better understand the professional formation ofengineers at PUIs, and better assess our curriculum within its liberal arts context, faculty fromthe School of Engineering partnered with two sociologists to develop an instrument to assess theprofessional formation of our students. projections from the U.S. Bureau of LaborStatistics “call for the number of engineering jobs to continue rapid growth, far outpacing jobgrowth for the labor force overall.”2Of further interest in this discussion is the trend in engineering technology (ET) education andspecifically for the associate degree programs. From the numbers provided in the Engineering &Technology Enrollments, Fall 1999 report3, enrollments for engineering technology programs arerelatively stable though still 4-5% less than they were in 1990. These programs are either losingan increasing number of students between the first and second year or the two-year degree istaking longer than two years for a growing population of students (see figure 1
