universities are adapting to technological advancesand society needs by introducing new courses, new programs and concurrently implementinginnovative methods to complement the class room teaching. Fundamental engineering theoryconcepts are still the core material in introductory courses, however, implementation andapplications of this theory is becoming more and more specialized. Specialized fields inengineering disciplines continue to grow in order to meet this demand. As a result engineeringcurricula must provide relevant examples for students, be based on the needs of society, anddevelop methods used by real world engineers1.One such specialized field is the current demand for engineers with fundamental understandingof building system design. interoperability among the sensor nodes 5. As shown in Figure 2,the information of real world is sensed by the sensors. Then, the sensor nodes are taken as a serialof logical nodes with corresponding physical information. The physical information is processed, classified and normalized into various data classes of an information model. The informationmodel complies with the seven layers of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. Moredetails about the OSI model can be found elsewhere 6.After the WSN is built-up, the interfaces used to communicate with the actuators are integratedinto the WSN 7. The embedded processors will control the actuators according to the informationprovided by the sensor network. The basic layout of a WSCN can be found in Figure

However there are limitations to the use of tide charts. Tide charts are mostly basedon astronomical forcing or the influence on water levels of the respective motions of the earth, the moon, and the sun. There are locations around the world, including the Gulf of Mexico, where other factors such meteorological forcing often dominate tidal forcing and limitsignificantly the application of tide charts. In such cases other models must be developed toaccurately forecast water levels.Different schemes that we are using for the prediction of water levels include harmonic analysis

IntroductionTheory, Fabrication, and Characterization of Nano and Microelectromechanical Systems (NEMS-MEMS), a graduate course at the University of New Mexico, is taught via a series of lectures and sixhands-on laboratory experiments in a Class 1000 cleanroom. The objective of the course is toprovide a foundational knowledge of MEMS theory and applications and to provide students withhands-on experience in microfabrication by developing an electro-thermal actuator. The electro-thermal actuators were made of aluminum deposited on silicon wafers using a photoresist sacrificiallayer. Many designs, which comprised the same features but differed in

In addition, if that part can be actually fabricated and fit into anexisting assembly, it makes the abstract design process more vivid and real for the student. Afterall, “it always works on paper!” — or nowadays, the CAD terminal.Rapid prototyping provides an excellent way to achieve these objectives because it can produce acomplex part directly from a CAD model. Of the several rapid prototyping technologiesavailable, one of the more widespread is stereolithography (SLA), which uses an ultraviolet laserto

First, each group has preconceived notions about theother. The engineering students often consider the technology students to be mechanics and thetechnology students often feel the engineers don’t learn how to work in the real world. In a veryshort period, both groups see the errors of their perceptions and come to appreciate the talentsand skills of the other and understand how important both are to success. They learn tocompliment each other’s abilities. During a debriefing with a group of mechanical engineeringstudents on the SAE Formula project, they were asked if they would have

It provides hands-onexperience with real-world technology, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge inpractical settings. This process enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills as studentsanalyze and deconstruct existing drone designs to understand their functionalities and limitations. Moreover, engaging in reverse engineering fosters innovation, encouraging students to developtheir own designs and improvements. Additionally, it prepares students for future careers inaerospace, robotics, and defense, where understanding the mechanics of existing technologies

curriculums fail to draw connectionsbetween abstract math concepts and real-world applications. One such application is the powerdistribution system that students encounter every day, but probably do not realize its significanceor complexity. Electricity is the most popular form of energy because it can be transported with ease athigh efficiencies and sensible cost. It is often taken for granted, but when looked at as a singlemachine, the North American power grid is an incredibly efficient, safe, and robust system. 1,2Integration of this topic into K-12 curriculums helps students understand the world they live in,see math applied to real-world problems, and brings a much needed engineering element into theclassroom. The diversity of external needs, as well as faculty training and experience, leads to many different forms of Professional Application; however, the Professional Application activities share all of the following distinguishing characteristics: a. They contribute to the public welfare or the common good; b. They call upon faculty members’ academic and/or professional expertise; c. They directly address or respond to real-world needs; and d. Undergraduate research integrationinto curriculum promises benefits: student engagement and development of employer-desiredskills such as communication, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and the application of knowledgeto real-world settings.
