students worked with clientsfrom the local community to design a solution to meet their rehabilitation needs. In addition tothe projects, student assignments included reflection prompts, four hours of community service,and several empathy “immersion” experiences (i.e., wearing a blindfold while trying to completebasic tasks). Seven students opted to participate in the study, all in their 4th or 5th year in eitherbiomedical or mechanical engineering. Students completed pre- and post-course surveys aimedto measure changes in self-reported levels of empathy. In effect, EduGuide seeks to develop one’s mind-set, confidence, knowledge, skills,resilience/grit, and self-control, to enhance one’s personal development, understanding of the college culture andwhat it takes to succeed in college.The EduGuide program is used by each STEMGROW student intern throughout the summer and evaluated on theeffectiveness of both the program itself and of the mentors that act as coaches through the online platform. present.These results reflect the reduced communication channels between the instructor and the student.When the student is given a hands-on task, the reduced communication channels impacted theability of the instructor to convey information. One of the key metrics that demonstrates this wasthat students provided significantly lower scores for ”Communicate Effectively with Instructor”when the instructor was telepresent instead of co-located.Interestingly, students also gave lower scores to the telepresent instructor for questions about theirinterest in doing future work.
