’ class and course taking status. The next six questions were asked to understand thestudents’ perceptions and attitudes about the independent study/undergraduate research theyundertook during their undergraduate years. The last two questions were open-ended and askedto see what kind of transferable skills they gained, how the study will help them in their careerplans, and finally any comments/suggestions they might have. The independent study here reallymeans undergraduate research study as the participants involved in the survey wereundergraduate research students. Q.1. What was your student status (Junor or Senior) when you first took the independent study as undergraduate research (CE 4400)? a. Junior b

velocity V2 do not have the same valuesince the inlet and outlet pipe diameters are different. If the bulk flow rate Q is known, thevelocities V1 and V2 are easily calculated from the continuity relation: πD12 πD22 (5) Q = V1 = V2 4 4The efficiency η is found to be a function of the flow rate and is therefore not just a constant for agiven pump. Efficiency is an important characteristic of a pump, since, as indicated in Figure 2,the difference 𝑃𝑃𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 − 𝑃𝑃𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 represents power that is lost.Fundamental variables appearing in pump characteristics curves

liquid (usually water) emitting at a particular flow rate Q, initial diameter d, andangle of inclination θ, flowing steadily into an atmosphere of air with a trajectory determinedexclusively by the action of gravity g, giving it a reasonably predictable path. Naturally, a fountainshould make excellent inspiration for a new laboratory exercise to both the most- and least-stereotypical engineering students. The premise for this laboratory exercise is that a team of Mechanical Engineers have been hiredto create a system of fountains for display at an amusement park. They must design a pump-drivenpipe network that operates two fountains with distinct performance goals. Fountain A,diagrammed in Figure 1, is nearly vertical and must support a ball at a

equipment — makes scheduling in-sync with whole-class lecturespossible. The working section of the flow loop is a transparent square tube with internal sides of h = 44 mmand a length of at least 300 mm depending on the model. Water is pumped from a source by anelectric submersible pump, for example an aquarium pump, providing flow rates on the order ofup to 300 litres per hour (Q = 83 × 10−6 m3 /s), leading to channel Reynolds numbers up toReh ≡ Q/(hν) ≈ 1900 where ν is the kinematic viscosity. At these flow rates the flow is laminar, but the channel boundary layers are thin.Flow conditioning using a sponge and honeycomb was effective to achieve a uniform flow at theentrance — if bubbles are absent. performed thatallow students to investigate radial 2-dimensional diffusion from a point source. Thisarrangement, with careful planning of the stationary and mobile phases, could enable students tostudy more complex diffusional dynamics with direct applications to drug delivery. Thisarrangement, coupled with a heating source and various materials such as aluminum, steel, brass, and Pyrex strips coated in thermochromic dyes, should allow the students to create time-lapseheating and cooling curves.AcknowledgementsSpecial thanks to Fall 2023 BEN 361 students for the use of their pictures and data.Bibliography [1] Q.
