a hurdle for many test takers. Since the tests are administered in English, studentsfrom other linguistic backgrounds may not perform up to their ability, particularly on the verbalportion [13]. One recent study [14], though, challenges this assumption. Moreover, the tests arenot designed to measure soft skills and leadership, which are important factors affecting successin graduate school [15]. It should be noted that the Educational Testing Service, whichadministers the GRE, is aware of this limitation and is working on another test to assess theseattributes [16]. But it is not part of the current GRE.Test anxiety [17] is another reason why standardized tests might not provide an objectivecomparison of candidates. Many students experience

really important.” In addition, advisors also highlighted students gaining soft skills, “(student) got to interacting with people, tounderstand how you can utilize other resources and people to get things done, because you can'tdo everything yourself.” To be noted, a finding that emerged only from the advisor in the nationallab is their perceptions about students’ growth in research skill: “we spent two weeks trainingthem, making sure they understand the fundamentals but then, for the most part after that it's onthem. You know, collecting data, interpreting it, asking the scientific questions that need to bepursued, and that's exactly a research process.”Moreover, advisors from corporations indicated that having P3 students benefited their

STEM knowledge. For instance, Fox et al. recently examined the skills thatcompanies have been looking for in the field of quantum sensing, networking, and computing 1 .According to this study, in addition to advanced mastery of fundamental sciences such as physicsand mathematics, employers valued engineering skills including hardware design andtroubleshooting. The researchers also added that the current nature of the field necessitatespreparedness for cross-disciplinary collaboration, team work, and awareness of businessesoperations.Others have conducted similar studies across STEM disciplines, asking employers what skillsthey value in the workplace. Across these studies, most discussed so-called ‘soft skills’ includedproblem solving

thecomplexity of the teaching responsibilities that is prescribed by the difficulty of disciplinarycontent, the role of technology in the content, and the objectives of the engineering programs thatnow include acquiring soft skills, such as collaboration and communication, in addition to theknowledge of the engineering content. Research studies have shown that semester-long courses(16 weeks) are the most effective formats for preparing GTAs to teach in engineering and computerscience [7]. Nevertheless, for these courses to be effective, they must offer GTAs opportunities tolearn, apply, and reflect on different teaching practices so they develop competencies associatedwith the TPACK domains. In this study, an existing semester-long teaching and

importantly, refining a pedagogical approach. This skill set is seamlessly transferable toprofessorship. These positive unintended consequences merit further exploration. There is, of course, more work that could be done to increase equity throughout the qualifyingexam process involving active participation of academic departments. For instance, transparencycan be increased through the use of a rubric or otherwise clearly stated criteria for a ‘passing’evaluation. Also, the exam could be framed as an opportunity for every student to learn aboutthemselves and improve by creating the expectation that examiners will provide all students withboth positive and critical feedback. Furthermore, the implicit soft skills that are tested by oralqualifying exams
