. These tests offer threetrials based on the student’s performance. If the student passes the test with a grade of B (80%)or more on a trial, s/he does not have to take the next trial. Each new trial involves new questionsthat have similar difficulty levels to the previous trial. Therefore, if the student retake a trial,his/her grade will be reduced in the successive trials. The student will not receive a grade untilhe/she successfully solves the trial or exhaust all the trials. It is important tonote that the homework problem is usually a larger problem requiring at least 2-3 hours of work.However, all the tools, solved sample problems, software to check the solution, and more areavailable to the students.The topic test is usually one problem to be solved in a 20-30 minute class time and it is given toall students who have passed that topic. enrollment in STEM areas has beendeclining; this is particularly true for minority and Appalachian students. This project workedwith two batches of twenty students each. Each batch was organized into four teams of fivestudents. All students were first provided instruction in logic circuits and ladder logic. Ladderlogic circuits for four tasks were created; a) simulation of automatic garage door, b) simulationof four way traffic light, 3) controlling a light via a physical switch, and 4) physical control offive lights. The five lights mimicked traffic lights (red, yellow, yellow left, green, and green left)at an intersection. The students were asked to control the timing sequence of the lights.
