Most simply, small (∼1 cm2) solar cells can be characterized by pointmeasurements such as open-circuit voltage, photocurrent, efficiency, and spectral response.However, solar cells, including large-area devices (∼ 100 cm2) and modules, can be analyzed inmuch more detail by scanning and probing the solar cell to map the localized electrical andoptical characteristics and performance in two dimensions. Here we describe the adaptation ofan inexpensive (∼$100) desktop laser engraver and a low-cost CCD camera for 2-D profiling ofsolar cells based on light-beam induced current, spectral response, surface roughness topography,grain structure and texture, and reflectivity. testing (UT). The sound energypropagates through the test specimen in the form of waves. When the waves face any discontinuityor crack, some part of the energy is reflected due to the acoustic impedance mismatch [8] at thepoint of cracks. The transducer captures the reflected signal and transforms it into the electricalsignal which is displayed on a screen. By analyzing the signal, one can easily obtain thequantitative information about the size, location and orientation of the crack. A schematic view ofa typical UT system is shown in figure 1. were measured before and after twoworkshops specifically designed to teach metacognitive awareness and teamwork. To put in anutshell, the integration of soft skill development into manufacturing simulations consists thefollowing steps: (1) students conducted a manufacturing simulation, (2) student soft skills weremeasured, (3) students attended soft skill development workshops, (4) students conducted moremanufacturing simulations using what they learned from the workshop, (5) student soft skillswere measured again, (6) student change in soft skills were compared and project evaluated, (7)researchers drew conclusions and reflect on the project. machining and steel for welding. • The cost of the materials should not be significantly increased from the current year’s lab.Each team submitted a report describing the proposed product and the sequence of lab activitiesneeded to fabricate each component. Each team also presented a 5-minute “sales pitch” to theirclassmates. The students peer evaluated the projects in four categories: feasibility, cost,presentation quality, and appeal. The highest scoring project (Fig. 5) was created in thefabrication lab the following year (spring semester 2018). Students in the course received one or more of three tools designed to be“mindset interventions,” i.e., to help students shift from a fixed to a growth mindset. The firsttool was a series of workshops taught by the tutors, guiding the students in reflecting on theirexperiences so far in the course and how they fit into a fixed or growth mindset.
