Faculty MembersApproach Culturally Relevant Engineering Education at an Iraqi University.AbstractThis evidence-based research paper emanates from an Iraqi context. After 15 years of conflict,Iraqi higher education institutions are crucial to the country’s efforts to rebuild and unify.Engineering in particular is an important discipline for the individual and socio-economicdevelopment of skilled workers needed to restore and rebuild national infrastructure. Engineeringfaculty enabled with the tools and skills to productively teach, learn, and research can mentorgraduates with the technical and professional skills needed to support the country’s economicgrowth. In 2019, the US Department of State funded a project to invest in the

Each exam consistedof 10 questions covering the concepts listed in Table 1. The only reference permitted during theexam was a common reference sheet (see Figure 1). Students were permitted up to 55 minutes tocomplete the exam. Testing began with the seniors in the Class of 2019 and has continuedthrough the juniors in the Class of 2023. Students in the Classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022 havetaken both the junior and senior versions of the exam. Number of students who have taken eachtest are provided in Table 2. Lecturestypically consisted of content delivery interspersed with example activities for students to complete.Outside of class, students completed regular homework assignments and three mid-term exams and acomprehensive final exam were used as the primary assessment tools for student learning. In Spring of 2019, the course was moved to a flipped instruction mode. The details and impacts of thismodel were previously discussed [12]. To summarize, this iteration of the
