diversity and collaboration, there was an initial optimism that theopportunity to build new programs from scratch in chemical, electrical and mechanicalengineering would allow great efficiency by integrating courses with similar content in differentdisciplines. Initial efforts at jointly teaching thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transferbetween chemical and mechanical engineering failed. Faculty in the two disciplines felt that thesubject matter needed to be directed toward the primary applications in their own disciplines, andstudents complained that they could not understand the material presented in the other discipline,or that the material was irrelevant.
