may not be meeting those challenges.MethodsContext: This research was conducted at a single large research intensive (RH-VH) public universitylocated in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, as part of an NSF Funded S-STEM program. S-STEM programs are intended to support low-income students in their trajectories to and through school. While most funded SSTEM programs in the United States are aimed at undergraduate student support, thisSSTEM is unique in that it supports low income Master’s students to obtain thesis-based MS degrees.Students in the program are supported financially, have substantial professional development programming, regular mentorship meetings with faculty affiliated with the program, and peer/near-peer mentoring. Additionally, cadets give a poster presentation at USMA’s annual Project’s Day held during the Springsemester each year.ConclusionThe pyroelectric crystal accelerator at West Point provides the cadets in the Department ofPhysics and Nuclear Engineering a unique opportunity for outside the classroom, discoverylearning. Cadets can apply classroom skills to real world applications while gaining valuableresearch, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. This project will help them to be moreproductive in future academic endeavors as well as in future career fields.1. analysis of asecond packet capture (pcap) file. The pcap files are used from a previous and publicly availableNetwork Forensics contest [5]. Utilizing a pcap file, the students learn to extract a transmitted fileand locate information in a TCP connection stream. Next, students replay a TCP file from an oldhoneynet scan of the monthly contest and learn how to review and analyze alerts in Snorby andsquil [6]. Once students are familiar with these tools, they are given another task named “AnnSkips Bail” [7]. The purpose of this lab is to find some specific data in the pcap files. Onechallenge to using publicly available contests, is the easy availability of answers; especially forolder contests. In addition to answering the specific question(s
