scientific rigor, critical thinking, and research independence.Key strategies for impactful mentorship are proposed, including establishing clear expectations, collaborative planning, structured deadlines, research portfolio development, and frequent check-ins. Importantly, the research study emphasizes the delicate balance mentors must strike betweenproviding guidance and encouraging student autonomy, allowing mentees to take ownership oftheir work while offering supportive oversight. By examining mentorship programs across variousinstitutions, this research aims to identify and recommend best practices for integrating meaningfulresearch experiences into undergraduate engineering education. The insights presented contributeto the ongoing discourse

of collaborativeproblem-solving theories into practical teaching strategies remains a significant challenge, largely due to the absence of concrete guidelines [12].Graduate Teaching Assistants are often the primary point of contact for students in laboratoryand recitation sections, where their approachability and relatability, due to closer age andexperience levels, can significantly enhance the learning environment [13]–[16]. This dynamicpositions GTAs as crucial facilitators of both subject matter and research-based knowledge, potentially impacting students' satisfaction and perception of value in their laboratoryexperiences [13]. However, the effectiveness of GTAs is contingent upon their ability tointegrate subject matter expertise with

they clearly understood the impact of theinsulation. Similar conclusions were drawn by IDEO on the topic of energy efficiency in a2009 study for the Department of Energy13.The upshot of their research efforts was that it led to a number of new ideas and directionsfor their design project. They now began asking how can practicing design engineersinnovate in this field? Their goal became innovation, in the sense of searching for new ideasthat lead to a significant impact on society. They concluded that investigating new energyefficiency technologies would be an unlikely path to innovation because of the lack ofinterest on the part of consumers.ConclusionsThe two students working on the Now House Project were able to find a new direction, entirely

Education, 2025 Impact of An Engineering Task on the Development of Middle School Students’ Engineering Design Practices (Fundamental)AbstractThe 2020 ASEE Framework for P-12 Engineering Learning outlines concepts, practices, andhabits of mind to promote engineering literacy for graduating high school students. However, how these practices develop over time and what is appropriate for students to learn at differentgrade levels has not been determined. This study examined the development of middle schoolstudents' engineering practices through an informal, distance-learning engineering program.Ninety assessment videos from 30 students across three engineering design activities wereanalyzed using a qualitative research design. Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)initiative aims to recruit students to careers in research and has funded over 1,700 sites totalingover $435 million (of which over 600 sites receiving $171 million in funding are presentlyactive)1. Research by the STEM education community concurs that these research experienceshave a positive influence on undergraduates in a variety of ways. Yet, many of the specificaspects of the nature benefits to participants and how they accrue to participants are not knownor well understood.Prior work by the first author used Lent’s Social Cognitive Career Theory to study the impact ofREU programs on undergraduate students’ self efficacy for graduate school and researchcareers2. Phase I provides some preliminary evidence that our initialassumption about the impact of the ISD program on engineering graduates may be correct. Inthe second phase of our assessment program we will perform a more detailed assessment toquantify this assumption.IntroductionIn today’s global economy, there is a large need for engineers to understand how to communicateand operate with foreign customers and co-workers. International education opportunities helpbreak down cultural barriers and provide engineers with the experience and knowledge to designunique solutions to innovate solutions in a global setting. at the natural intersections of learning within the continuum of content areas, educational environments, and academic levels [6].The absence of such pedagogical practices presents a key problem for promoting studentdevelopment of higher order thinking skills necessary for critical thinking and problem solving(CT and PS) in the context of the 21st century needs. Engineering in K-12 provides theopportunity to bring together the science and mathematics content and practices within thecontext of design-based authentic problem-solving. Researchers [7] argue that a sequenced andcohesive K-12 engineering program would be a reasonable option to encourage and preparestudents to STEM career pathways and prepare them for a successful

things work as proposed, andsometimes they never figure it out. Most researchers are familiar with the need to evaluate the end results of a completed project, which in the professional evaluation community is termed outcomes evaluation (or impactevaluation). While necessary for funded projects, outcomes evaluation is summative—at best itmight reveal what the researchers should have done, but it comes too late to change what theyactually did. A formative approach called utilization-focused evaluation helps project leadersmonitor and improve their project throughout its term.1 A particularly powerful utilization-focused technique is implementation evaluation (or process evaluation), in which a trainedevaluator is brought into a project from its

Finally, the CFFs components, while purposeful, wereimproperly implemented within the EOYR and NRP’s episodic-oriented components, namely thereports. Thus, during the revision of the NRP, SHPE national leadership provided the NAC the 9opportunity to overhaul the program’s design but constrained to having measurable outcomes andalignment towards SHPE’s mission. The addressable threat for the NAC was that the significantchanges to the NRP would lead to a lack of participation by the chapters. However, the NRP wasintegrated

Integrated ethics content canencourage students to practice “what is right to do and how will my decisions impact thesociotechnical and societal norms within society?” The process of seeking answers for thesequestions can help students to recognize the ethical and moral conflicts as a part of designproblems. In a complex design process, there are often conflicts, and these potential conflictsshould be considered simultaneously by design engineers [7].Researchers conceptualize the design process and propose moral reflections with distinctapproaches that are informed by empirical research in socio-technical contexts [6]. One such examplewas a workshop with graduate students, administrators, faculty members, and postdoctoralresearchers that culminated in suggestions for engineering graduate education: (1) clarifyexpectations, (2) attend to the community, (3) organize the research group for mentoring, and (4)structure student development toward independence [8].A civil engineering research group at a public research-intensive university developed a retreat tosupport socialization, address the aforementioned challenges, and integrate best practices ingraduate education while also drawing on organizational change and workforce
