Unless he could succeed in thePre-Calculus Algebra course mandated in his degree plan, he would not be able to complete thedegree. This student reached out to the academic support services unit at the university andpartnered with members of the mathematics tutoring staff to create tools that would allow him tosucceed. The outcome of their efforts was the development of PDM. To foster such collaboration and lay a foundation bridgingengineering and the liberal arts, we developed a linked pair of first-year-seminars addressinga “grand challenge.” Building on the WPI Great Problems model [2], these two First YearSeminars are team taught by a mechanical engineer and a political scientist, each addressingthe problem of global hunger. planned to ask students to participate in a post-survey, we found thatthe journal entries, reports and presentations provided sufficient student feedback to gauge theirperceptions of the value of the service-learning module for their education, careers and livesmore generally. This feedback is summarized here.Overall, students were overwhelmingly positive about the service learning in this course, anddescribed it as a unique and foundational experience, as in this example: “I really enjoyed the entireday. Competition and termination of the effortwill happen late April, when students will assemble at Paine Field, in Everett, WA, tocompete as one of five teams in a fly-off against well-specified mission plans that teamsdeveloped themselves and proposed to a review panel as part of the system developmentprocess. leadership education.We identified fourteen key informants through personal networks and participation in thenetwork known as COMPLETE (The Community of Practice for Leadership Educationfor the Twenty-first-century Engineer). We conducted semi-structured telephoneinterviews with senior program leaders. For each program, we started with web-basedresearch as preparation for interviews that ranged in length from thirty minutes to twohours. Each interviewee was sent four broad question areas in advance: overall approachto engineering leadership, connection between technical engineering and leadership,resources and networks, and evaluation/assessment.
