For Fall 2021, the topic was material and energy balances (MEB). The topic wasdefined in the survey as “a material and energy balances course covers the conservation of massand energy in a chemical process context”. The survey was directed at faculty of courses inwhich this was the main topic, not a simple introduction, and not at faculty of thermodynamicscourses unless they covered balances in a chemical process context. Auto-graded homework questions withrandomized numbers and content can explore students’ proficiency in course material. Using afully interactive online textbook, Material and Energy Balances zyBook, success and attempts onhomework questions are quantified. In past studies, students with an unlimited number ofattempts completed a median of 94% correct over hundreds of questions. In this study,a fully interactive online textbook, Material and Energy Balances zyBook, has been employed withseveral cohorts of students. Recent findings focused on quantify reading across three cohortsrepresenting over 280 students and almost 300,000 reading interactions.
