Dr. Kelly Salyards is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bucknell University. With degrees in Architectural Engineering from Penn State, she began her career as a consulting structural engineer before returning to academia. Her areas of research include vibration serviceability and human-induced excitation while maintaining her dedication to engineering education. She is active with the American Society Civil Engineers (ASCE) through the Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) program and Committee on Scholarships.
Camilla Saviz is Professor and Chair of the Civil Engineering Department at University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA where she has happily taught since 1999. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University, an M.B.A. from the New York Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Davis in the area of hydrodynamic and water quality modeling. She is a registered Professional Engineer (California), an Envision Sustainability Professional, was elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2017, and was honored to receive the Thomas A. Lenox ASCE ExCEEd Leadership Award in 2020. Her teaching, research, and professional interests include water resources engineering, sustainability, and engineering education.
Dr. Tricia Clayton (she/they) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering at Wake Forest University.
Dr. Jul Davis is an Associate Professor of Engineering at the University of Southern Indiana (USI). He received his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in Engineering Mechanics in 2007. He began his teaching path by teaching Dynamics at a local community college in 2008. Before his appointment at USI in 2010 he served as a post-doctoral researcher at University of Massachusetts where he studied bite mechanics in bats and taught System Dynamics. Jul has a passion for research in biomechanics and education. He loves teaching finite element modeling, vibrations and all of the fundamental mechanics courses
CAPT Corinna Fleischmann is a licensed Professional Engineer with military, academic and research experience in water resources engineering, environmental engineering, coastal resiliency, construction project management and engineering education. CAPT Fleischmann is a career educator who has been a member of the US Coast Guard Academy (CGA) faculty since 2004 and served as the Civil and Environmental Engineering Program Chair from 2017-2021.
CAPT Fleischmann is a 1998 graduate of CGA. Upon graduation, she served two tours onboard the USCG Cutter ELM. Following her afloat tours, she began her civil engineering career as a member of the CGA Facilities Engineering branch where she served as both the Safety Officer and the Construction Officer. During this tour, she was the Project Manager for the Academy’s $5.2 million dollar construction program. Desiring to continue her career as a Civil Engineer in the Coast Guard, CAPT Fleischmann earned a M.S. in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Construction Engineering and Project Management from the University of Texas, Austin in December 2004. Upon graduation, she was assigned as a rotating military faculty member at CGA and in 2008, she was selected as a member of the Permanent Commissioned Teaching Staff (PCTS) in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Program. As a faculty member at CGA, she has expanded and modernize the Civil and Environmental Engineering curriculum with the development of elective courses in Water Resources Engineering and Coastal Resiliency.
CAPT Fleischmann’s passion for teaching and learning began early in her career. In 2007, she was certified as a Sustainable Building Advisor through the National Sustainable Building Advisors Program. In 2009, she began her PhD work at the University of Connecticut in Civil Engineering. Since earning her PhD in 2014, she has continued to seek out research opportunities. Current collaborations include work with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Research and Development and Homeland Security on the Analysis for Coastal Operational Resiliency (AnCOR) project to assess the USCG’s preparedness to respond to a wide-area biological contamination incident impacting stormwater infrastructure and work with CGA and USCG Health, Safety and Work-Life (HSWL) to develop COVID-19 sewage surveillance protocols. Additionally, CAPT Fleischmann is actively involved with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) program and spends time each summer mentoring civil engineering faculty at colleges and universities throughout the US.
CAPT Fleischmann is married to Coach Dana Fleischmann, a faculty member of the CGA Health and Physical Education staff. Coach Fleischmann serves as the Defensive Coordinator for CGA football and as the Assistant Coach for Women’s Varsity Softball Team. They have two daughters, Josslyn and Jayna.
Dr. Tonya Nilsson is a Senior Lecturer and the Vice Chair of the Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Department at Santa Clara University. In addition, she is the EWB and SWE faculty advisor. Prior to SCU, she was an Associate Professor at California State University, Chico and a practicing engineer focusing in structural engineering. Tonya holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; a Master of Science in Structural Engineering from Stanford University; and a Ph.D. in Structural Mechanics from University of California at Davis. She is a licensed Professional Engineering in California. Tonya has a long standing history with the ASCE ExCEED Teaching Workshop and in 2020, she won both the Teaching Excellence Award for the School of Engineering and the Brutacao Teaching Excellence Award, her universities most prestigious teaching award.
Dr. Omur-Ozbek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University.
Dr. Fethiye Ozis is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the civil and environmental engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Ozis holds a B.S. in environmental engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Southern California. Dr. Ozis is a licensed Professional Engineer, Environmental, in Arizona. Before joining CMU, Dr. Ozis was a faculty member at Northern Arizona University, and at University of Southern California.
Dr. Ozis enjoys every dimension of being an engineering educator. She teaches across the curriculum from freshman introductory level, to graduate level courses. Dr. Ozis conducts research related to engineering classrooms and innovative pedagogical strategies.
Dr. Ozis passionate about broadening participation in engineering. She has been an ASCE Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) fellow since 2016, and currently serves as an assistant mentor.
Dr. Mónica Palomo is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she teaches senior projects, and environmental and water resources engineering undergraduate and graduate courses. She is the CWEA-AWWA student chapter advisor. Dr. Palomo holds a Civil Engineering degree from the University de Guanajuato, México, and her MS and PhD degrees (both in Civil Engineering with Environmental emphasis) from Kansas State University. Her research interests are in water and wastewater treatment, natural treatment systems for water remediation, sanitation in developing countries, engineering outreach, service learning, and engineering education. Dr. Palomo has served as chair of the student council, ASCE Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI), she served as division chair and is current member of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Engineering Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Dr. Palomo also serves as an ABET Program Evaluator. She is a 2009 fellow and mentor for the ASCE Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) teaching workshop. Dr. Palomo believes that fostering curiosity and life-long learning skills we can make the world a better place. She believes that an inclusive and equitable learning environment is critical for students to be motivated and enjoy their learning journey.
Dr. Carolyn Rodak is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute in Utica, NY.
Dr. Cristina Torres-Machi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. She holds a dual PhD degree from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain and the Catholic University of Chile. Prior to joining University of Colorado Boulder in 2017, she worked as a Research Associate at the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology (CPATT) at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Dr. Torres-Machi has more than 10 years of experience working on advancing the current management of infrastructure assets, with a focus on highway projects.
Leslie Nolen serves as Director, Educational Activities for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Reston, VA. She oversees the Society’s higher education efforts, including accreditation of engineering programs through ABET, Inc., faculty development through the popular ExCEEd Teaching Workshops, and activities of the Department Heads Council. She is the staff liaison for the Committee on Education and the Committee on Accreditation. Prior to working in educational activities, Leslie managed the Society’s grassroots advocacy strategy. Among her primary responsibilities were overseeing the Key Contact Program and the annual Legislative Fly-In Program, bringing civil engineers to Washington to learn about and lobby their elected officials on legislative issues affecting civil engineering. Prior to joining ASCE, she served as Government Relations Associate for the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (now the Auto Care Association.) Leslie is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and is a past chair of the Government Relations Section Council. She achieved the Certified Association Professional (CAE) credential in 2015.
Leslie received a Bachelor of Arts in Government with a minor in Music from The College of William & Mary in Virginia.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) Teaching Workshop (ETW) started in 1999 and has produced 1035 graduates from 266 colleges and universities throughout the world. ASCE has conducted 44 week-long, inperson workshops without interruption for over two decades. The ExCEEd graduates returned to their home universities and applied the lessons of this workshop to the classes they teach. The details and long-term benefits of the ETW have been reported in many venues. In Spring 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic swept the nation and remained a persistent threat throughout 2021. As a result, the in-person workshops scheduled for Summer 2020 and Summer 2021 were canceled. This paper is the third in a three-part series that describe and assess how ASCE modified and continued the ExCEEd program during this difficult period. This third paper focuses on the behind-the-curtain activities conducted before and during the two-week virtual remote ETW (R-ETW) held from July 5-16, 2021. The findings are shared through the perspectives of the R-ETW Site Coordinator, Content Providers, Mentors, Assistant Mentors, and to a lesser degree, the participants. This paper covers the implementation of the planning and logistics of the R-ETW rehearsals, execution, challenges overcome, assessment of the effort and recommendations for the future. Effects of the changes are described in the context of the ExCEEd Teaching Model. The challenges and opportunities discussed in this paper are of interest to higher education and professional communities interested in forming or developing virtual workshops or learning communities with missions similar to that of the ASCE ETW.
