Shayan Mirzabeigi is currently a PhD student in Sustainable Construction Management at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). His master dissertation was about solar radiation and human comfort. His first degree was a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Tehran, Iran, in 2016. His current research interests cover energy efficiency in the built environment, integrated building assessment, building physics, building envelope and materials, and built environment sustainability.
Construction management education is increasingly adopting innovative learner-centered technology-rich approaches to prepare students for leadership roles in the construction industry. Still, there is a need for evidence-based studies to measure the effectiveness of such approaches and their transferability at different institutions. Consequently, this paper presents a study of an innovative project-based approach for teaching construction scheduling using Reality Capture technology. As part of this study, students used technologies such as 360 cameras and 360 walkthrough software to collect reality capture data from an operating construction site and used it to create project progress reports. This study used a designed quasi-experiment to assess the effectiveness of this approach regarding students’ learning performance and satisfaction with two groups of students in the Construction Scheduling course who collected the data from the site and who used the data to fulfill the class activity. As part of the experiment, a survey was completed by students who completed the reality capture activity to provide feedback about the experiment while other students of the class provided the feedback on whether the approach was helpful for better communication between their project teammates and presenting data for project progress. This approach aims to transfer the construction management knowledge to students, while fostering their leadership abilities and communication skills. The proposed technology-based training can also reflect the application of evolving knowledge in construction and building sciences. The students learn time- and cost-efficient methods of capturing, transferring, and storing site-related factual data to assess the status of a project and how this information is used to prepare for upcoming construction activities. The findings of this study support the development and implementation of practical learner-centered education for building construction education using reality capture. This technology-based training also informs the discipline about the opportunity for utilizing automated data capture technologies to monitor construction progress and train the workforce.
